“Machel’s Ranch” Column; The Rancho Santa Fe News (May 3rd, 2012 Issue)

I am sitting in my backyard. The air is quiet. The sky is blue. There is a hint of summer in the air today in the harsh sunlight, which has been hidden by the clouds almost all winter. I am in between moments. In about 45 minutes I will be driving down to La Jolla. I will zip down there on the freeway, weave in and out of Torrey Pines Road and arrive about one minute before I am on the floor at a fine art gallery I work for. Before this quiet minute to write, I made the rounds in the early morning with my husband for his Lemon Twist. We listened to “Bill Handle On the Law.” We gathered local produce and zipped back to Rancho Santa Fe. Then we unloaded and watched the world trickle in and out of the fruit stand. I dipped strawberries in melted chocolate from Europe, I swept floors and met customers on holiday for the weekend in Southern California. I even managed to squeeze in a nature walk and managed not to be side swiped by the mountain bikers on the San Dieguito reserve trails. Now I am here. I am quiet. Life has slowed down for one hour so I can breathe in a moment of solitude. I am enjoying the simple chirping sounds of the sweet birds that like to eat the sunflower seeds I leave for them. I am taking time to enjoy petting my two Siamese cats on the patio furniture outside under the shade. For now, I am grounded in simple things that are soothing to my soul. When life is in constant action, don’t forget to nourish your soul with reflective silence. Make time. Don’t forget that quieting the mind is like inspiration to the soul.

On April 21, I received some great news! Del Mar Majors Yankees team celebrated their win over the Red Sox in Carmel Valley. On a coincidental note, the real “Yankees” team beat the Red Sox, too, on the same day. One of these young boys may be headed for the real majors someday…you never know. After losing a couple of games, the thrill of victory is even sweeter. Their smile says it all. Congratulations to the parents, coaches and kids that enjoyed sweet victory that day.

On April 24, I ran a few errands in Rancho Santa Fe after picking up my son from school. Stumps Village Market and the post office are always buzzing with a packed parking lot, many people, and on this particular day a man a political group had gathered with signs that read, “Impeach Obama.” Well, I always say, you never know what you might be missing around town if you aren’t going out. The big news that happened that day is I discovered on the town message board a flyer about a Labrador retriever mix named Archie that is looking for a home. His big smile and sweet eyes really spoke to me. “I’m wonderful and sweet and would protect you,” the smile said. Well, I tore off the little tab, called Beth and found out that he most definitely needs a home. So if you are looking for a devoted mature dog to bring love and laughter into your life, Archie is for you!

Later that day, I received a beautiful photo of fourth-graders Morgan Meyes, Reese MacDonald and Logan Zarkroske at the Gold Rush party at Ocean Air Elementary. This extravaganza is devoted to fourth-graders learning about California history and what happened during the gold rush period. How wonderful! This picture captures more than just that. It reminds us why friendships are so important in our lives, even at a young age. Never take your friends for granted.

On April 26, I stopped in at my very favorite bookstore in the whole wide world: The Book Cellar. This lovely second hand bookshop is a pleasant, meditative experience. From the absolute quiet seclusion of being buried between many rows of fabulous books, what I love the most are the volunteers who sit in front that volunteer their own private time. After purchasing “Stern Men” by Elizabeth Gilbert and a book called the “The Office Goddess,” I found out the yearly half-off book sale is just around the corner.

Adele Snyder, Elaine Oswald and Mary-Ellen Drummond are all members of the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild. They were kind enough to let me snap a picture so I could help promote this sale in the paper. All books will be 50 percent off. There is even a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate. Don’t miss out! The book sale runs May 3 to May 5. For more information, visit rsflibraryguild.org.

On April 27, I found a few friends and a smile at my favorite restaurant in Rancho Santa Fe — Mille Fleurs. Due to a very busy work and writing schedule, I haven’t been there to enjoy Randy Beecher’s excellent piano music and lively ambience. How wonderful to see everyone, it felt just like old times again. Miss Krista Lafferty — the assistant advertising manager for this paper — was there along with her fiancé Mike Confer, my husband Robin Shull, Ranch resident Ben Simmons, Shannon Elle and Vicki Lavanty. Many of you might recognize Vickie as a well know hair salon owner in Solana Beach. Vickie has had her own salon there for more than 15 years. If you are interested in discovering a new place to call home as far as a salon, call Vickie at (858) 350-1764.

“Why I almost missed my Birthday Luncheon and San Diego Food Bank raises 40K.”
On Valentine’s Day, I was bit by a dog—literally. I originally was going to conceal this, you know, not discuss it, but the five stitches and the mauling of the hands truly took my health down a black hole and showed me some important things in life. (Just so you know the dog was a pet animal that had escaped, while his family was out of town.) Running in and out of traffic in Del Dios, I ran north toward the light of Cielo. There he was the black Labrador, just about to cross into traffic again. Well, the next thing you know, I’m sprinting. I had leapt over the railing and he is friendly, sweet really, like, “Thank goodness you have arrived.” Then dog panicked and tried to get away, which resulted into a serious gash in my wrist that required five stitches. The wonderful news is the owner was thankful the dog had been saved and took care of the medical bill.
After the incident occurred, I kept thinking, “You never know what’s around the corner.” Cut to the following week. I have a birthday party arranged at Mille Fleurs with a few close friends. The day before I almost canceled due the pain in my wrist and hand; I felt like my body was an open wound and just needed to stay home. However, I forced myself out into the world, into the bright sunny day and made it to my party. This taught me so much. I almost missed out on that magical moment, surrounded by friends, due to my own vulnerabilities from that freak accident. I almost didn’t allow myself the glory of love and friendship because I was too enmeshed in my own pain. We all deal with moments where we would rather stay safe than being exposed. The lesson here is to force ourselves out into the sunlight even when we would like to stay ‘small.’ Thank-you, to my girlfriends for surrounding me with light and love that week. I truly needed your  support.
AROUND TOWN
On February 17th,  “Fashion Plates,” Luncheon and Fashion Show Fundraiser, which was hosted by Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank raised almost $40,000 for their backpack program. And event I should have been attending but had been otherwise thwarted by a canine, turned out to be a smashing success in La Jolla that day. Leonard Simpson’s Fashion Forward fashion company also helped sponsor the gala. The money will be used to provide lunches for chronically hungry elementary children here in Southern California.  The event was held at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla that day. Featured here in the column are four guests that attended that day, Ramin Pourteymour, John Winfield, Jennifer Greenfield, and Sally Thornton. Thank-you, to Chris Carter for extending the lovely invitation.
On February 21st, I managed to pull myself out of  bed, clip my hair up quickly in a make-shift bun and wear my cute black pants out to my some of my fondest friends at Mille Fleurs for my birthday luncheon. Of course, wouldn’t you know my black leggings had a snag, and a last minute jaunt to Rite Aid remedied the situation. I did arrive ten minutes fashionably late, and was seated by the French Doors next to the courtyard. Well, if the party could have gone any better, I don’t how that could have been possible. Besides my hair looking bit too wind-blown since my arm hurt too much to brush it, all of my friends made it! During lunch, I toasted each of them with a quick story on how we met and why they are wonderful to me. Most of them did know about the gash stitched up under the bandages. Luckily for me, I made it out to one of my favorite days since I married Robin back in 2009. I think this group photo tells the story quite well. There wasn’t one cloud in the sky that day. One of my surprise visits for my birthday luncheon was when Cici Whitney from Newport Beach, Meredith MacDonald’s mother. Cici shared some very exciting news with me, which I can’t wait to reveal in next issue’s column! Lots of all of my friends that made it that day, Krista Lafferty, Shannon Ehlers, Bianca Macaluso, Melissa Williams, Jill Sorge, Meredith MacDonald, Maggie Bobileff, Jill Drouin, Denise Hug, Karian Forsyth, and Elaine Gallagher.
Later that evening, I stole away with my husband for a romantic dinner at the Chart House in Cardiff by the Sea. We ran into Ranch resident, Joel Levine with his new girlfriend, which I might reveal later this spring if given the “Green-light.” (Sorry, not truly a bonifide gossip column here. Rancho Santa Fe keeps it classy!)
On February 28, my husband surprised me with a “Brazilian Blow-out.” which is a hair treatment that conditions and staightens your hair.I had originally wanted to have my hair done in the Ranch. However, after speaking to a salon in Fairbanks—no names mentioned—I felt rather certain I would rather swim with sharks than walk into their salon. (Maybe they were having a bad day.) Anway, this detour had me walking into the cutest salon in Leucadia area, called Noni. Ladies in the Ranch, sometimes a drive toward the beach even for your hair appointments is well worth the time. I highly recommend this salon to anyone. Hairstylist, Tawyna Proctor, was wonderful, kind and truly put me at ease right away. I also found out that Tawyna is a jewelry designer extraordinaire her locally in San Diego. Her inspiration comes from the beach and are created to beautifully
adorn the female figure in natural beauty. “Made for a Goddess but priced for a beach babe,” says it all. Check out her website at: www.NoniLovedesigns.com.

Magical Moments this Holiday Season, The Book Cellar, and An Important Mission

“Machel’s Ranch” The latest happenings Around Town and Inspirational stories featured in the Rancho Santa Fe News

The RAncho Santa Fe News, located in Rancho Santa Fe, California

If you could go back in time and be a child again would you? I have often heard others ponder their childhood with much warm hearted memories. What was it about being young that seems elusive to us as we find ourselves in a wide open field in the midst of our lives? Could it be that we understand time better or rather recognize with age as we gaze back and remember who we once were? During the holiday season my childhood memories always come back to me, like a flickering images from a movie reel.

I grew up on a farm near Springfield, Missouri. The winters were cold. The pond froze over and we would skate across it in our cowboy boots. Then we would watch our breath rise up to the white sky and blend in with the blanket of snow falling down on us below. The “Us” would be my brother, sister and me. We were pretty tight as kids. We built massive forts in the snow, played a tag game called chicken and fox over the icy pond. I never believed in Santa because we lived on a farm and I knew there was no way he could really fit inside a wood burning stove. We always watched “It was a Wonderful Life” and “Scrooge.” We had “Taffy Pulls!” Live moved slowly when I was young, and I didn’t know as a child that wishes and dreams can sometimes take you away from what you loved the most. So now each season, after the turkey has been served and as families are decorating their homes with mistletoe, I find myself remembering the young girl I was and early my beginnings. This holiday season, remember to look back, count your blessings and be thankful for each season. Sometimes we never know how magical our moments are until they are gone.

My childhood Christmas Memories of ice skating on a pond when we were young.

CORRECTION: Well, my favorite book store in the whole wide world must hate me! Recently, I realized my serious gaffe after someone pointed out the name on my coffee cup, “Book Tales,” which most of you probably know is in Encinitas. That is a wonderful bookstore, too. However, my favorite bookstore that I try to frequent at least once a week exists just around the corner from the Rancho Santa Fe Library  is “The Book Cellar.” Please forgive! My only excuse is I write late night into the early hours of the evening and sometimes mistakes can happen when you do this. So for the record, if you would like to read and buy books in Rancho Santa Fe, “The Book Cellar” is a gem of place. What I do, is always donate the books back, when my room starts to take on too many stacks against the wall or they start falling of my night stand. Make sure you stop in this holiday season for a book as a gift. They have fabulous prices.  And, the quiet, still space between the rows of bookshelves just warms your soul.

During the first week of November, Dr. Michael and Lynne Skyhar stopped in at the Lemon Twist Gift & Produce Shop in Rancho Santa Fe. Lynne and Dr. Mike live in the area and were just so wonderful to meet right as dusk was setting across the valley behind the shop. We shared some quick conversation and they were kind enough to let me share this photo in my column that evening. I love meeting new people. Mike and Lynne were very gracious and kind. Thanks for stopping in at Lemon Twist and for reading the column Mike and Lynne. Happy Holidays!

On November 13th, I attended Esther Wong’s Charity fundraising party in Cielo with my best friend, Jill Sorge. The party was hosted by Esther, Taylor, Diane Wong and the Santa Fe Christian India Mission’s team. Part of the proceeds from this event will be included in a check they are presenting in person in India at the Grace Home Orphanage and school. My favorite part of this party was watching the video clip from their last year’s trip over to India last year. If you are interested in helping donate to this charity, here is a link with information: http://www.sfcs.net/about/Pages/why_sfcs.aspx. I have included a beautiful photo of Esther and Taylor Wong from that day.

event, which benefited Rady Children’s Hospital here in San Diego. Look at this fabulous shot that I have included from this event! In the line up, we have Kim Smart—from Smart Interiors, Elaine Gallagher, Ally Wise, Candace Sears, and Jan Doyle-Wehlag. All of these lovely, smart women are business professionals, friends and most of all, they are shopping to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. Well done. Make sure you shop this Christmas or donate extra items that you don’t need to charity in need.

On November 19th, It rained all day in Rancho Santa Fe. But that didn’t stop the Sassy Santa Event that my gal-pal Krista Lafferty organized with the Garden Club. When I stopped by that  Saturday there was a massive food truck feeding the shoppers out front, a Santa listening to children’s wish lists, and a plethora of local businesses beating the Black Friday date by one week. Inside the Garden Club,  felt festive and warm. I enjoyed strolling the isles and seeing all of the vendor’s  merchandise.  Here is a photo from that day, too. Congrats to Krista, The Rancho Santa Fe Rotary and to all of those that came out to support local businesses this holiday season. Please continue to “Shop Small” this season, too.

Rancho Santa Fe's Sassy Santa Event was a SMASHING Success for The Rancho Santa Fe Rotary. Meet the Three women that made it happen. But most of all, my gal-pal Krista Lafferty.

Caring for the Soul, Fabulous Birthday Trips Under The Eucalyptus Trees in Rancho Santa Fe

“Machel’s Ranch” The latest happenings Around Town and Inspirational stories featured in the Rancho Santa Fe News

Do you have the courage to be real? Do you show your true colors or are you just one those faking it to fit in on your cul-de-sac? If the latter applies, you are missing out on the fundamental joys of who you are on the inside. Your soul is all you’ve got. And, if you aren’t portraying the “real you,” life will catch up with you eventually. You can never turn back the hands of time. We cannot erase the mistakes of yesterday. If you aren’t being true to yourself, no one else is either. After stepping into the art world recently, I am finding much inspiration from staring deeply at paintings every day. I am finding that textures reveal tones, colors and layers and a story underneath each brushstroke. Our reflection in the mirror is similar to this. What do you see when you look at yourself?  Be still in the morning and ask yourself, “What do I love? What would bring me joy? What inspires my inner self?”

Just like a tree, your soul needs nourishment. Trust me, even if you are a parent, you must make adjustments for what you love or one day you could wonder what happened to that 12-year-old with dreams?

A must read~

So, don’t try to fit in. Take time to make time for you. Life can be incredibly short. Be the person you can be proud of each day. Author Thomas Moore’s book, “Care of the Soul,” deals with this topic. I highly recommend it. After all, life isn’t a dress rehearsal and those “do-gooders” up the street? Trust me, they’re not truly your friends anyway. So make sure you’re at least a good friend to yourself. Because you are worth it!

Around town

On Oct. 29, I received some exciting news regarding Santa Fe Christian’s seventh grade flag football team: “ My name is Jason Stewart and I’m a former division one college basketball national champion turned flag football coach! I’m debuting with these guys and I love it.”

The flag football team helps prepare the boys for high school football. According to their website, “We view the middle school flag football program as a farm system for the Santa Fe Christian High School varsity program because we run an 8-Man version of the Wing-T offense that Coach Nick Ruscetta teaches … we are one big happy Wing-T family over at SFC!” Welcome Jason Stewart and good luck to you this season. Santa Fe Christian is one of my favorite schools in the area. I have included a photo of Coach Stewart with the seventh grade flag football team.

On Nov. 1, I received some romantic news about one of my favorite couples in Rancho Santa Fe. Karian and Tom Forsyth are usually on the scene

Rancho Santa Fe Residents, Tom and Karian Forsyth in Whistler, Canada. Every year, Karian surpises Tom with a fabulous birthday trip.

many places around town, while hosting sizzling spa parties by poolside during the summer. Well, Tom’s birthday is just around the corner in the beginning of December. Guess what his birthday present is each year from his bride? Karian takes Tom to the airport each year on his important day and whisks him away to an unknown destination, which he does not know about until he arrives at the counter and receives the ticket in his hand.

Last year, Karian surprised Tom with a trip to Whistler, Canada. I have included a photo straight out of a James Bond movie, with the couple standing in front of a red helicopter up on the snowy slopes in Canada. Can you say “movie stars?” Also pictured is Tom with his buddies here in the Ranch for their local celebration. I wonder where it will be this year for the Forsyths’ next big adventure? How lucky for Tom, wouldn’t you agree? Stay tuned until next month for that news!

On Nov. 3, the Rancho Santa Fe school board honored R. Roger Rowe students who received perfect scores on their STAR testing at their meeting that evening. Parents, siblings, teachers and friends all gathered together at the Performing Center of Arts to witness this wondrous celebration, that honors the students and their perfect winning scores. Superintendent Lindy Delaney was also there to encourage the students. She also gave them all a personal tip: “When shaking hands, make sure you make good eye contact, too.” Excellent advice! Featured here are two of the recipients, my son Jackson Tuck and Rachel Waite. Rachel Waite is the daughter of Lance and Anna Waite. And, just in case inquiring minds would like to know, Jackson Tuck, is also the son of well-known news anchor Michael Tuck. Michael is now retired, remarried, and recently had a baby girl with his wife, lawyer Jill Tuck. They live in the covenant in the Ranch. Congratulations to all of the students from that night. What a special evening it was for all us there.

Rancho Santa Fe's Infamous Rat Pack~ Watch out Vegas, here are the local celebrities Around Town.

On Nov. 5, I received a wonderful picture of a Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club member’s granddaughter, Reese MacDonald. Reese’s soccer team scored the winning goal that weekend and the girls were all smiles (so were the parents!) that day. Reese is featured with her best friend Alexi Aloni. Both girls scored important goals that day for their team.

Later that day, I stopped by Lemon Twist Fruit Stand in Rancho Santa Fe for a wonderful art exhibit by local artist Nancy C. Henderson. Nancy was selling her beautiful original oil painting under a perfect blue sky on that lovely Saturday afternoon.

I took a photo of Nancy proudly standing next to her art that day. Nancy’s art varies from local nature scenes here in Rancho Santa Fe to the rolling hills of Tuscany. If you would like to buy any of Nancy’s art for your own collection, visit nancychenderson.com.

Popular resident Holly Manion came out to lend her support that day, too. We missed each other by just 10 minutes!

Rancho Santa Fe News, “Machel’s Ranch” -Blessed to Live in America

While many in Rancho Santa Fe celebrated the parade on July 4, I was out of town for
the first time in years during this particular weekend. I spent my holiday back
in Spirit Lake, Iowa with my family. I know what you are thinking — rows of
corn, flat fields and a fly over state. However, this local town in northern
Iowa is a wonderful resort area that is as picturesque as a Norman Rockwell
painting. Watching the fireworks from my parents’ boat at night on Lake Okoboji
rates up there as one of the best patriotic exhibits I have ever witnessed. The
evening felt magical. For more information onvacation spot, click this link:

Tracy G Howard and Micky K. Penn, Machel's sister and mother on holiday

On a side note, have you noticed the July 4 weekend
is one of the happiest holidays during the year? As I was traveling back to the
Midwest, travelers seemed more relaxed and less frazzled than other holidays.
Maybe it’s the long weekend, or the fact most employees enjoy a paid vacation.
Or could it be that most Americans truly are patriotic and care about this
country? I think so. Anyway, I hope you had an excellent weekend, too. I hope
your heart was filled with inspiration and pride for living in the best country
in the world. We are all so very blessed.

Out of Town

On July 1, I ventured to downtown Spirit Lake with my sister and mom to this wonderful
place called The Market. If you are looking for a health food store like a
Jimbos in a small town, you will probably be out of luck. Not so for the
residents in this small town. This quaint restaurant, attached to the
mini-market of the health food store, is painted in bright yellow with the most
gorgeous tiled floor. You can enjoy organic dishes; order sparkling Perrier and
other healthy drinks, while relaxing at your table. This outing happened to be
my favorite moment of each day. Featured here, is my sister Tracy with our
mother, Micky Kay Penn. I have also included one photo of Hill Street where The
Market is located. Here is also a link to their website: http://http://www.themarketcoop.com/about.html.

On July 4, my sister and I headed to the YMCA for our
daily workout. Right beside the gym was the cutest teenage girl selling corn
under an umbrella. Yes, I confess, there is corn in Iowa. And guess what? It’s
known as “Candy Corn,” instead of sweet corn, which I found interesting. My
sister kept saying, “Let’s buy some candy corn,” and I kept looking for the
kettle corn booth like you see at the fair (silly me). Here is a fun shot of
Tracy standing with a local resident that day. Yes, there are pretty girls in
Iowa.

Later that night we watched the fireworks on the lake with hundreds
of other residents and boaters scattered in the darkness. This evening almost
felt magical to me. My son ran back to me at the end of the boat and said, “See,
mom, told you it was way better than you thought.” He also let me know that he
would be moving to Spirit Lake when he was an adult, which I found rather sweet.
Of course, I am hoping this inclination fades and he stays in California! I
would share a photo, but I’m not sure it will really turn out well in print in
the newspaper.

On July 5, I left Spirit Lake and descended at LAX
Airport. What’s wonderful about getting away on a vacation is that it truly
makes you appreciate your own life and schedule. That old adage, “You can never
go home, again,” is absolutely true. Though we may miss our childhood and our
immediate family, age and time will manage to prevent you from truly returning.
And, I must add, for the first time in my life I understand that saying. Let’s
just say, driving back to San Diego, while the ocean glimmered to the west of
the freeway, I was one enthusiastic girl to return home to
California.

Around Town

On July 2, Rancho Santa Fe’s piano man
Randy Beecher celebrated his birthday at Mille Fleurs with fans and local
residents. Hope it was a wonderful day, Randy! Thanks for adding so many
wonderful memories to my life as well. Also, just in case you haven’t heard,
Mille Fleurs is launching a “Singles Night” on the first Thursday of each month.

So if you are single and you are looking to mingle, this is the place to
be in Rancho Santa Fe on the first Thursday of each month. If you would like
more information regarding this event, visit: http://http://www.bestpianobar.com/.

In town on July 3, The Pan American Cup Finals were held at the San Diego Polo field.
The weekend event included a featured band, the “classic divot stomp” like in
the movie, “Pretty Woman,” and prizes for guests. Featured here in the winner
photo are Krista Bonaguidi, Chris Collins, Mariano Fassetta, and Alvaro Tadeo
(holding his daughter, Valentina).

Also featured from that day are the
publishers of FINE Magazine, Heather and John Winfield. It looks like
that was an amazing event for the locals here in San Diego. For more information

On
July 6, I received some wonderful news from my favorite bed and breakfast in the San Diego area, Jamul Haven. If you are looking for a “Stay-cation,” this is a
five-star International B&B you must check out.

The owners, William Roetzheimand Marianne are wonderful, inviting and really take amazing care of their guests. Right now they are offering a promotion: buy two-week nights and receive one free until the end of the year. Here is their website: http://http://www.jamulhaven.com/.

I stayed with them for my 39th birthday last year and since thenI receive their monthly newsletters, which I just love reading.

Also, on Aug. 6, Jamul Haven B&B will be hosting a reading by James Reynolds, “The
Shakespeare You Never Knew,” a parody. For more information visit the website listed above. Here is an excerpt from a column I wrote in 2010 regarding my stay at Jumal Haven:

(The following excerpt is from the B&B Journal I wrote in while I stayed at Jamul Haven).

February 20th, 2010

Dear Bill and Mariann,

Machel at Jamal Haven for her birthday in 2010

I am sitting in the white furry bathrobe I found hanging in the closet. I am reading your magazines on Victorian homes and relaxing, while my husband is having the most peaceful sleep. For a bit, I hung out in the Angel House kitchen and ate the delicious snacks I found in the refrigerator. I drank the milk and ate the banana. Then I called my mother and told her I was having the best birthday of my life. We haven’t even left the Peacock Room because we love it so much. We had forgone dinner in town because this time is too precious at your beautiful B&B and I don’t want to waste it by eating at a typical restaurant. My heart is quieted by the stillness and history of this room. Time feels trapped here and I am so glad to have found “Jamul Haven.”

“Sometimes dreams do come true,” is what I said to my husband tonight. Thank you for having us stay here this weekend. You deserve more blessings because you have blessed others by restoring such a wonderful historic landmark. God Bless you Always.

Sincerely, Machel Penn Shull and Robin

This was my entry the weekend of my birthday at a Bed and Breakfast I had found on the Internet. Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you. You don’t realize there is an ache in your heart until something reminds you it’s still there. That’s what happened to me at this quaint B&B. I found pieces of my childhood inside the walls in Angel House. I sat there on the wraparound porch and watched the clouds drift across this hills. I listened to the birds sing that weekend I turned 39. I reminisced about what I still miss, which is the farm I raised on in Missouri.

What I want to focus on here now with you is what I discovered that weekend. I unearthed the most amazing getaway that is like something out of a Jane Austin novel. We’re talking history and romance restored inside a ranch that was established by Charles Gifford in 1890. He was the first person to can olives successfully for commercial sale in America.

The owners today — Marianne and William Roetzheim — took three years to restore this historic landmark into an already internationally recognized B&B. The Ila-chateau.com, which is an exclusive group of independently owned hotels in Europe, USA, Canada and Southern Africa, rate list only five B&B’s in America and Jamul Haven is one of them.

What you must know is there is a place within reach where you can escape for one or two days. You can find the relaxation you need and pampering in one of the finest B&Bs. You can drive to Jamul, which only 40 minutes to from Del Mar. There you can find reprieve in a forgotten time you cannot find here in San Diego.

Perched up on a hill, above the gated communities near the golf course there, Bill and Marianne have created a retreat where you feel safe from worries in the real world. Their caring nature and their suburb manor as the hosts of Jamul Haven, reassures you that good down to earth people do exist.

After one of the best breakfasts I have had in years — I had frittata, ham, fruit, homemade coffee cake, plus more — you simply don’t want to leave. What I discovered there was a little piece of my soul that still misses the red earth in Missouri. Thank you Bill and Marianne for letting me go home, albeit if only in my dreams.

Sophie Kinsella, “Confessions of a Shopaholic Series”

With summer only one week away, I must share with my readers one of my private joys.
One that allows me to lighten-up during my own weekly routine: When in doubt,
pick up a book and find the ultimate escape at your fingertips. (For you
technology savvy individuals like my son, this suggestion can also include a
Kindle or a Nook.) Recently, I discovered a remarkable writer that has had quite
a run of success — Sophie Kinsella.

My favorite Chick Lit Series -Ever- "A Must Read!"

From her popular series,
“Confessions of a Shopaholic,” to one of her recent novels, “Twenties Girl,” I
haven’t had this much fun reading in ages. Laugh-out-loud funny is the best way
to describe one of her books. I seriously ponder how I can manage to squeeze a
day in my room with the drapes open to the outside world, while drinking my
coffee and reveling in one of the novels with hours of undisturbed reading
time.

Trust me, if you are looking to find a marvelous quick read for an
upcoming beach excursion, you must check out her website for more of her novels.
Here is the link: sophiekinsella.co.uk/. And, just in case inquiring minds want
to know, Sophie Kinsella began her career as a financial journalist in London.
Happy reading this summer!

On May 22nd, I I received an e-mail from
Tracy Williams regarding the Olivenhain 4-H Club.  As a past
president of a 4-H group in Southern Missouri, I know first-hand how wonderful
this club is for members and the families involved. The officers of the
Olivenhain 4-H club woke up early to help serve breakfast at Father Joe’s
Village in downtown San Diego. How does 5 a.m. sound as the meeting time? Now
that’s impressive.

I’ve included a photo of all of the local 4-H members
that dedicated their early morning Sunday to helping serve the less fortunate
here in San Diego.  They did everything from serving breakfast to stocking the
food areas, to packing treats, and even cleaning up and taking out the garbage.
Tracy, thank you for sharing this wonderful accomplishment with the RSF
Community.  If anyone deserves to have their photo in the paper this week, it’s
this inspiring group featured here in my column.

On May 28, I attended the Yankees game at Richardson Field in Rancho Santa Fe. My son plays on the
team, and one of his teammates I have featured here, Lucy Rickerson.

Lucy Rickerson, with her mother Nancy, had an outstanding season this year in the Rancho Santa Fe Major’s Little League Division. Photo by Machel Penn Shull

I am featuring Lucy is because she simply rocks in baseball! From playing first
base to pitching to hitting triples, she is one of the star players on the
Yankees team. She was the only female playing in the Rancho Santa Fe Majors this
year. I have featured a beautiful photo of Lucy with her mom, Nancy Rickerson,
for this issue.  They were kind enough to allow me to photograph them that
day. This will be Lucy’s last year to play baseball, because she is focusing
more on soccer for next year. Well, let me tell you Lucy, the game of baseball
will miss you and don’t forget what a true pro you are at this sport, too.  I
loved watching you excel in baseball this year and doing justice to the female
gender when it comes to women competing with men. Excellent job Lucy!

OnJune 1, The Rancho Santa Fe R. Roger Rowe School held its open house on a
glorious sunny day in the Ranch. Parents and students enjoyed the beautiful new
campus as everyone walked around meeting teachers, while checking out the
classroom work. I ran into Lisa McVay and snapped this really exceptional photo
of her with her son Nick that day. I have also featured my son with his 5th
grade teacher, Jennifer Easbey. Also, thank you to all of the parents that
donate their time to help out at the school. Your hard work is much
appreciated.

On June 4, The Helen Woodward’s elegant Broadway Tails event
took place in the arena area of the Woodward center. I helped Lemon Twist owner
(and my mother-in-law) Katie Shull make over 800 chocolate covered strawberries
that day prior to the event. Believe it or not, this is one of my favorite
events of the year. This is my fourth year to help out. Her business was just
one of the many sponsors that donated their time and effort in helping raise
money for Helen Woodward’s amazing organization.

At the event that evening I loved seeing everyone in the Ranch. Rosie Gross, Dixie Courtney,
Tricia O’Brian, and the Fetzers from Cielo are just a few of the familiar faces
I featured here from that night. I have also featured a photo of Laurel McCrink
with her sister Katie Shull. Thanks for including me Katie! I always end up
having so much fun on this special day. And, to Dixie Courtney, thank you for
being one of my readers! Please contact me with any fabulous stories you might
want to share for this summer. It was a pleasure meeting you that
evening.

Rancho Santa Fe News “Machel’s Ranch” “Out from behind the Clouds in Rancho Santa Fe

Rancho Santa Fe, Californa

As I write this, the sun is shining mercilessly outside my window. The weather is
glorious. And have you heard? We are officially out of the drought according to
the news in March. I know everyone has been moaning about the weather, the
clouds, and of course, I list myself in this category, too. But it looks like
this heavy rainy weather has helped us out immensely besides the obvious
positive like the mountains in Cielo look lush and green this spring.I feel as if the clouds have lifted from my spirits, too. This month, life is
starting to feel back to normal. I know I have mentioned that a couple of my
good friends died last year. This has been rather traumatic, which I’m sure
you may understand from grieving over a loved one who just passed. Maybe I am a
slow healer. However, I think it’s important to give yourself time to heal and
really deal with your emotions, in whichever way is appropriate for you.

The sun has finally found its way out from behind the clouds. Rancho
Santa Fe has never looked more beautiful. I read a great quote from a Sophie
Kinsella book, “Twenties Girl.” It goes something like this: “Life is like an
elevator. It carries you on regardless. You might as well enjoy the view and
seize every opportunity, while passing.” I shall remember this, too, as I enjoy
the rest of my day.

Around town

On March 11, I received some exciting news regarding one of the Del Mar Little League AAA Teams,

The Scrappers. They were on a winning streak during the month of March only losing
one game. I have included a photo of the team that definitely captured the pride
these young baseball players felt about their winning streak. The good news is
it looks like they are having fun, too! Congratulations to the Scrappers and
keep up the happy smiles on your faces. If your son is playing baseball in and
around the Rancho Santa Fe area, please feel free to share a photo with me at my
e-mail listed at the end of the column. I would love to feature their team
before baseball season is over.On March 20, it looks like Hollywood paid
a visit to Rancho Santa Fe in “Amazing Race,” style. Casa De Amparo Amazing Race
event rose more than $25,000 for abused and neglected children. The event
organizers were Linda and Vivian Lee Ford. They both dedicated nine months of
their lives to help these children in need. For the Rancho Santa Fe version of
this game based on the television show, five teams of four bid $5,000 each last
October at the swanky Crystal Ball Gala. Ranch resident Dottie McCrink sponsored
the winning team: Natalie Shull, who just happens to be my sister-in-law, was
captain; Adam Levins; Jennifer Dos Reis; and Josh Dixon. I have included the
group photo of all of those that participated in the successful fundraising
event, plus the event organizers. Sometimes certain stories deserve a bit more
recognition and this is one of them. How wonderful so many came out to help
raise money for Casa De Amparo. For more information on this charity, visit
casadeamparo.org.On March 25, Jacqui Grandi contacted me regarding the
San Diego Horse Show Alliance. She wanted me to spread the word regarding their
organization. “We have fabulous news! We have secured a few large community
sponsors for some of our horse shows.” Then she added that if anyone in the
community would like to sponsor a show, to attend the next meeting, which is at
11 a.m. April 7 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds board room. The San Diego Horse Show
Alliance would like the also increase the community awareness and increase
attendance at the horse shows. If you would like more information on this
meeting or this organization, please contact Jacqui directly at
info@oakridgefarmrsf.com. If you didn’t know, Jacqui is also a well-known
jewelry designer in the San Diego area with a wonderful sense of
style!

Later that day, my husband Robin and I had the pleasure of
attending the CD release party of local San Diego rock band Silence Betrayed at
SOMA, not far from downtown San Diego. Krista Lafferty, assistant advertising
manager of the Rancho Santa Fe News and one of my best friends, is engaged to
one of the band members, Mike Confer. Well, the night was full of fun, great
music and a smashing performance by the band. I have included a fun photo from
that night of Krista with her very own entourage. Thanks for the invite and keep
finding the foot lights, Silence Betrayed. Your music sounded amazing that
evening.

On March 29, I had the great pleasure of meeting one of my
favorite people in Rancho Santa Fe, Elaine Gallagher, at Mille Fleurs. We had
the best time sharing our stories and just enjoying the wonderful ambiance
there. Before I left, I was informed by Marko Dedic, head manager, of some
exciting new specials on the menu there. Sunday through Thursday, Ranch
residents can enjoy a three-course dinner (with regular portions of the normal
menu) for only $40! Vegetarian options have also been added to the menu; under
appetizers and dinner choices. Also, don’t forget to make your reservations for
Easter and Mother’s Day. You can call Mille Fleurs directly at (858) 756-3085.
Mille Fleurs has added charm and high class to Rancho Santa Fe for more than 25
years, with, I might, add the same chef, Martin Woesle. To find out about these
new specials and events, go to Millefleurs.com.

Save the date

On May 6, The Kids/Korps/Hugs for Kids Gala will be held at the Del Mar Grande, and
tables seat 10. Dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions will be taking place
that night. This is a very special night for local Ranch residents. “Hugs for
Kids — In Honor of Julien Hug,” will be announced that evening. This charity
event will be including special tributes to Julien Hug, plus many photos of him.
Ranch resident Julien Hug passed away only just this last November. To reserve
your seats for this special evening, go to

Meeting My favorite American Author-Luanne Rice, in “Machel’s Ranch.”

Sometimes life takes time to heal. There could even be a few moments when it feels like
the gray clouds won’t break. But when we least expect it, a ray of sunlight will
find us and remind us that this world is still a beautiful place. Dreams can
come true.

Columnist-Machel Penn Shull meets her favorite American author-Luanne Rice

Of course, I am speaking from my own personal experiences recently. I
am speaking of loss from last year and how circumstances can change our outlook
when weren’t prepared for the change.

This week in my column I feel so
lucky to share with you a dream-come-true moment for me. How this day brought
the hope back to my eyes and showed me passages and chapters in my own journey.
How what we cannot change will change us forever but there are gifts in unseen
circumstances that can teach us beautiful life lessons. Don’t forget to keep
believing in your fondest desires. When you least expect it, your shining moment
could unfold for you, too.
Around town
On Jan. 7,
Mille Fleurs’ bartender Jill Drouin invited my husband and I over for dinner.
Can you say gourmet cook and should enter one of those cooking reality shows?
Jill made us a delicious exotic salad with European cheeses, candied pecans on
top of mixed wild greens. Sounds simple but so mouth wateringly delicious. The
main course was a risotto with candied pumpkin squash in a white sauce. Then
boyfriend Paul Savage, Robin and I enjoyed a fun game of Scrabble and discussed
things like the Droid verses the iPhone. I have included a gorgeous shot of Jill
and Paul for my column. I might add that Jill and I bonded two years back when
we went skydiving together. You could say an experience like that could make
anyone become fast friends!
On Jan. 10, I had the incredible privilege to meet my favorite author walking this planet,
New York Times Bestseller, Luanne Rice.

New York Times Best Selling author, Luanne Rice

If you haven’t discovered her trademark fiction novels yet, she has
written 30 novels and is promoting her next novel, “Silver Boat,” which comes
out in April 2011. The back story on this meeting is quite contemporary really.
We became friends on Facebook five years ago, becoming pen pals via the
Internet. So imagine me this month finally meeting my mentor in the writing
world as I walked across the San Diego Convention Center in the midst of the
Library Conference coming face to face with Luanne. I am sharing with you my ray
of light moment that reminded me that little dreams do come true on occasion.
Coincidentally, 12 years ago when I started reading Luanne’s novels, I had no
idea we would become friends through a social networking. Luanne in is even more lovely in person.

What I love about Luanne Rice’s books is her ability to place emotion, heart and soul in her characters and the plots of her stories. As an avid fiction reader, Luanne tops my list of writers.  Take my advice, don’t miss
out on Luanne’s newest novel, “Silver Boat.” There is indeed a silver lining
inside this beautiful novel. I had the privilege of reading the unedited version
last year. Here is a link to her website: http://luannerice.net/2011/01/book-lovers/

"The Silver Boat" by Luanne Rice

On Jan. 13, the assistant advertising manager and my good
friend Krista Lafferty attended the grand opening event of Massage Heights in
Encinitas. Ranch residents, this is an amazingly short drive to this new
wonderful business that caters to relaxation at its finest. Heavy thread count
sheets are just one of the perks you might miss at other locations. I met owner
Dean Goldschmidt and Retreat Director Brenda Videnoff that night. Krista and I
received a private tour of all of the rooms and then enjoyed fabulous
finger-foods with other invited guests. I have included two photos from this
event.
On Jan. 14, the fifth-grade class at R. Roger Rowe Elementary
participated in The Walk Through the American Revolution. I was thrilled to
watch the three competing classes re-enact this monumental moment in U.S.
history. Each classmate was asked to memorize certain vocabulary words, plus act
out what character they were assigned. I’ve never seen more enthusiastic
children that actually seemed to care and love being in school that
afternoon.
I have included a photo from that day. Congratulations to the
R. Roger Rowe fifth grade class members and to your exuberant spirits. I walked
away inspired.
Later that evening, my husband I and joined previous ad
manager Denny Fallon in celebrating the purchase of his new beautiful condo in
Old Towne San Diego. Denny is a fabulous host. He made a delicious fish with
pasta, and fresh Dungeness crabmeat with homemade cocktail sauce for his guests.
Charlene Done and Johnny Nipkur were also there celebrating the start to a
wonderful year to Mr. Denny Fallon. I have included one photograph from that
evening.
On Jan. 16, I drove to Fairbanks to pick up my son from a
sleepover he had in the Ranch. Tony and Jill Sorge have been Ranch residents for
years. Their son Matthew is one of Jackson’s closest friends. Tony is actively
involved in The Rancho Santa Fe Little League, and had a championship under his
belt from 2006. He will definitely be assisting this year again. I have included
this photo of Tony with my husband Robin from that beautiful sunny day in the
Ranch. Tony had just shown us his own personal batting cage he had built that
even had a radar detector for pitching! Now that’s what I call first class
practice for any lucky boy.
Thanks so much for letting me share that day
with the readers Tony, and good luck this season.
