“Pick More Daisies and Celebrate Your Birthday Always”

Newspaper Columnist, Machel Penn Shull writes bi-weekly for The Rancho Santa Fe News in Rancho Santa Fe California, USA

By the time you read this I will be forty-one years old. Since my last column, Whitney Houston Died. Starting last year—right right before my birthday—I  become incredibly nostalgic for a good friend that is no longer here. The pop star’s death reminded me of the person I missed. You know, how events can trigger past wounds to resurface…death is not easy.  Life continues to go on, change, and  fill the gaps left behind of those that leave us. Their impact on us will never be removed. The photos that were snapped will always remain the same. We can take those memories with us and keep them close to our heart. Choose to remember all of the joy they brought to us, even after they are gone. We must continue to celebrate their memory.

We may not like what happens. In fact, it might be quite painful. What is important is how we let this event shape us and ultimately effect us. My favorite philosopher, which I often mention in my column is late Norman Vincent Peale. One of my favorite lessons I learned from reading  his books was this one suggestion: “Seek gifts inside your problems.” Inside each challenge is an important gift that can change our circumstances with dynamic proportions. Life can be difficult when dealing with grief and loss So, it is up to us to find our souls, ourselves and inside the  battle for recovery. Dare to find the joy even when the ‘signs’ may seem wrong, life seems awry and don’t forget to pick a few more daisies along the way. Be joyful for it all and let the memories carry us through during our darkest moments. With that said, I don’t have a problem with telling you I am thrilled to turn forty-one, celebrate and feel all that life can bring. Thanks again, for reading my column each week.
AROUND TOWN
On February 10th, I received an email from Lonnie, the sweet woman that we adopted my two new kittens from after my cat had died around Christmas time. With new energy and excitement, these beautiful kittens have brought much joy and love to my family. Lonnie now has new kittens that are ready to adopt. Here kittens have had their shots, have been vaccinated and are also micro-chipped. For a price that is average to adopting at a shelter, these cutie pies are rescued, too. Here is beautiful photo of the two kittens—Sophie and Lily—that I adopted from Lonnie. To find the photos of the kittens available, just look up “Fur.Ever  San Diego” and you will find the photos of the new kittens that need a home. Here is Lonnie’s number, too: (858)-731-6059. We just are so happy with our new babies!
On February 11th, The Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities celebrated  with their 34th Annual Gala, “Magical Moments,” at Estancia La Jolla Hotel. This event raises a significant amount of money for the resident assistance fund for the retirement community of Seacrest Village.  Here are some wonderful photos from this amazing fundraising event for the Bloch and the Levine families. Thank-you, Alyssa Law for sharing these photos with “Machel’s Ranch” and the Rancho Santa Fe News. For more information on Seacrest Village, here is their website: www.seacrestvillage.org.
On February 13th, “Ski Week” started for Rancho Santa Fe students and others in the San Diego weekend. For the holiday week, I took Jackson and a couple of his friends to a fabulous place nearby in Escondido. The rain did not detour us! What fun these boys had at Mr. Paint Ball USA, located right near Wohlford Lake. Here is a great shot of  Brett Vitale, James Coit and Jackson Tuck suited up in their paintball gear that day. If  you are looking for a fun excursion, this is a exciting way to spend the day—especially if  you have boys! Here is their website for more information on this paintballing location: www.mrpaintballusa.com.  Thanks Elise and Lori for letting me take the boys that day. We all really enjoyed it.
On February 14th, When lovers and friends celebrated Valentine’s and love I caught up with Sheila Malek, one of my very first clients when I used to work in advertising in the newspaper industry. Last year she relocated her business Ellie’s Tailoring & Best Formal Wear in Encinitas to a fabulous new location, which is right by Henry’s Market off of Encinitas Blvd. Sheila is a wonderful person that has many happy customers that always come back to her shop because she does such an excellent work and has such a personal relationship with each of her clients. Here is gorgeous photo of Sheila with her family during the Week of Love. If you need any tailoring or need to rent a tux for prom, here is the place to go: www.bestformalwearsd.com.
On February 18th, I stopped by Stumps Market in the Ranch to pick-up two delicious sandwiches made fresh from their deli department. A little tip from me if you love their deli, call ahead so you don’t have to wait and they are ready when you arrive. I have always loved the staff there and the owners, Dirk and Matt. I am sure if you live in the Ranch, you may be one of their many customers, too. To my delight, I ran into Allison Hess, Avalon and Gillian Chaffer selling the infamous-must-have-once-a-year-so-do-stock-up Girl Scout cookies. Here is a photo of the three of them that day, nestled in between the post off ice and Stumps. They were representing Girl Scout Troop #1106. Thanks so much for the cookie girls. You made my day!

Old Town San Diego “Bazaar Del Mundo”

Bazaar Del Mundo,  a hidden treasure in San Diego– Originally published in FINE Magazine in October 2009.

Don’t be afraid of the rattlesnake in Southern Mexico,” was the opening line to a song at the Bazaar Del Mundo, Santa Fe Market Art show.  The Mexican band began to play flamenco dance music as I strolled between the isles at colorful arts and crafts exhibit on one of the last beautiful weekends in San Diego. I felt like I had traveled back in time, while I admired all of the Indian pottery, turquoise jewelry and other distinct Southwestern influenced artists.

Southern Californian residents sometimes forget to venture outside of their comfort zone. With the beach always the main attraction, it’s easy overlook the local ‘hidden jewels’ that exist just around the corner from where we live. For example, Bazaar Del Mundo marketplace is a wonderful way to spend time with a loved one or family member besides your typical day by the pool.

On this particular weekend, I skipped the crowded beach, crossed the street in Old Town San Diego and headed down Taylor Street. My little adventure let me to Bazaar Del Mundo, a beautiful marketplace located adjacent to the main square in Old Town.  The 22nd Annual Santa Fe Market was being held that day, which featured crafts and arts of Southwest and Native Americans. The courtyard came to life under the shaded trees as I admired all of the paintings, pottery and other distinctive hand crafted trinkets.

On one corner of the marketplace was an artist called, Desert Dreamer. His art captured beautiful desert photography, Spanish influenced settings. The next art booth exhibited Marie Barbera’s hand-painted Indian sculptures depicting their way of life. I captured one photo of an Indian Chief that stood tall and majestic among the other sculptures.

Some of the artists included were the Navajo, Cherokee, Hopi, Pima, Isleta Pueblo and Santa Domingo Pueblo Indian tribes. Other artists there came from different parts of the United States, such as Arizona and New Mexico. I had no idea that I would find so much diversity and culture in one special corner near Old Town.

The next time you are planning your weekend, check-out this colorful marketplace called Bazaar Del Mundo. You never know what event you will find hidden beneath the shaded trees off of Taylor Street.

The Importance of Being Earnest in our Friendships”

Columnist Machel Penn Shull, "Machel's Ranch"

Oscar Wilde once said, “A true friend stabs you in the front.”  Originally, I was planning on sharing an over-the-top sappy friendship quote. However, after reading that, I redirected my thoughts on the subject. Figuring out the darker shades in our relationships is just as important as highlighting the sunny-side of things, too. So, I read a few more quotes from all sorts for famous important dead people that have made lasting impacts on society, like Thomas Jefferson, Helen Keller to Aristotle. I became quite inspired by their insights on why we need and have friends in our lives. Then I stumbled across this quote by Saint Jerome, which struck a never with me. “The friendship that can cease has never been real.” So, here is my question to you. Do you have enough courage to be honest with your feelings if that means risking a friendship?

If we don’t have the nerve to be real in our most intimate circles, than why bother faking it? Life is too short to be boggled down by unwanted drama and those that do noy truly care for the ‘real you.’  Yes, I have had my heart broken by close friends in the past. However, over time I have learned to be wise and less needy for useless acquaintance-ships. Quality verses Quantity, right? Here is one last quote by author Samuel Paterson that pretty much says it perfectly: Books, like friends, should be few and well chosen.” Now let’s focus on some ‘live individuals’ here locally under the eucalyptus trees  that appear to be having a ‘storybook summer.’

Karian Forysyth's Birthday party

On July 9th, Karian Forsyth celebrated her birthday in high style under a perfect blue sky in The Crosby. I do believe all of the clouds disappeared just for Karian’s special day!  I’m sure you recognize Mrs. Forsyth as one of my featured regulars in my column. What’s wonderful about Karian is she has the gift of making you feel like a celebrity. All of her guests are spoiled and pampered without exception. The women that attended enjoyed exotic salads and appetizers, while sipping champagne poolside. There was even a Hollywood Psychic giving personal reading for anyone that was brave enough to find out their future. (You can count me out on that one!) Oxygen Medical Spa was also on deck pampering the ladies with the latest facial treatments. Here are a few photos from that day. Happy Birthday to one lovely woman that is definitely my ‘real’ friend I and I feel am blessed to be in her inner circle. For more information on Oxygen Medical Spa, check out www.oxygenmedicalspa.com.

On July 10th, I celebrated my wedding anniversary with my husband, Robin Shull. We managed to squeeze in a quick ‘getaway’ to Laguna Hills the night before. On our way back to San Diego, we stopped at one of my favorite beach towns—San Clemente. And, what’s a romantic couple to do on a Sunday there? Enjoy sipping some of the best hot tea and eat crumpets together, while holding hands. I being a bit ridiculous, but yes, that’s what we did. We also met a lovely student/waitress, Erica Shrader. Her charm and warm personality was honestly such a delight. If you need a quiet adventure with your loved one or your girlfriends, this is worth the trip up the coast. From Rancho Santa Fe, I would say its only 40 minutes away. Here is more information on my favorite tea house—www.poshtearoomandcafe.com. I

have featured a cute photo of Robin with the lovely Erica we met from that day. Yes, I am a trusting woman!

July 15th, The Gallagher and Gallagher Team enjoyed a wonderful fashion show luncheon at the Paradise Grill in the Flower Hill Promenade. The fashion show was sponsored by “Ranch and Coast Magazine” and featured “TRE Clothing” and “Fairen Del.” The lovely models wore race track fashions accentuated with the classic hats to preempt the beginning of race track season in Del Mar. Featured here are four lovely women, including one of my favorite blondes from the Ranch, Mrs. Elaine Gallagher. Thanks for sharing this beautiful photo from that day, Elaine. A portion of the proceeds went to the Jenna Druck Foundation, which is also known as the Center for Community Solutions.

On July 20, “Opening Day at The Races,” at the Del Mar race track clogged the 5 freeways from both directions. If you were lucky on that day, you had a driver or you arrived by limousine. Otherwise, you were one of many fighting for a parking spot, then schlepping to the track in your heels across the dirt parking lots…that is if you happen to be a female attending the races that day.( Men’s shoes appear to be easier to navigate across the dirt lots.) Just thought I would throw a little reality from my own personal experiences in from the past. My great friend Bianca and Tony Macaluso invited us to attend in their private box. Unfortunately, this year and recent time off prevented both us from making it that day. Here are some gorgeous photos from their luxurious day at the races. They also celebrated their one

SAVE THE DATE: Mark your calendars for the CD release of local celebrity singer, Sacha Boutros for September 22nd at “Anthology,” starting at 7:30 p.m. Sacha sings locally here in San Diego, and is booked world-wide on tours from Europe to Japan. She was also listed at one of the top 10 jazz musicians in the U.S. in  2008. I attended Sacha’s CD release a couple years back and it was a smashing evening. If you love jazz, trust me, you won’t want to miss this event!  For more information on other local performances, here is her website information: www.sachaboutros.com.

Rancho Santa Fe News, “Machel’s Ranch” -Blessed to Live in America

While many in Rancho Santa Fe celebrated the parade on July 4, I was out of town for
the first time in years during this particular weekend. I spent my holiday back
in Spirit Lake, Iowa with my family. I know what you are thinking — rows of
corn, flat fields and a fly over state. However, this local town in northern
Iowa is a wonderful resort area that is as picturesque as a Norman Rockwell
painting. Watching the fireworks from my parents’ boat at night on Lake Okoboji
rates up there as one of the best patriotic exhibits I have ever witnessed. The
evening felt magical. For more information onvacation spot, click this link:

Tracy G Howard and Micky K. Penn, Machel's sister and mother on holiday

On a side note, have you noticed the July 4 weekend
is one of the happiest holidays during the year? As I was traveling back to the
Midwest, travelers seemed more relaxed and less frazzled than other holidays.
Maybe it’s the long weekend, or the fact most employees enjoy a paid vacation.
Or could it be that most Americans truly are patriotic and care about this
country? I think so. Anyway, I hope you had an excellent weekend, too. I hope
your heart was filled with inspiration and pride for living in the best country
in the world. We are all so very blessed.

Out of Town

On July 1, I ventured to downtown Spirit Lake with my sister and mom to this wonderful
place called The Market. If you are looking for a health food store like a
Jimbos in a small town, you will probably be out of luck. Not so for the
residents in this small town. This quaint restaurant, attached to the
mini-market of the health food store, is painted in bright yellow with the most
gorgeous tiled floor. You can enjoy organic dishes; order sparkling Perrier and
other healthy drinks, while relaxing at your table. This outing happened to be
my favorite moment of each day. Featured here, is my sister Tracy with our
mother, Micky Kay Penn. I have also included one photo of Hill Street where The
Market is located. Here is also a link to their website: http://http://www.themarketcoop.com/about.html.

On July 4, my sister and I headed to the YMCA for our
daily workout. Right beside the gym was the cutest teenage girl selling corn
under an umbrella. Yes, I confess, there is corn in Iowa. And guess what? It’s
known as “Candy Corn,” instead of sweet corn, which I found interesting. My
sister kept saying, “Let’s buy some candy corn,” and I kept looking for the
kettle corn booth like you see at the fair (silly me). Here is a fun shot of
Tracy standing with a local resident that day. Yes, there are pretty girls in
Iowa.

Later that night we watched the fireworks on the lake with hundreds
of other residents and boaters scattered in the darkness. This evening almost
felt magical to me. My son ran back to me at the end of the boat and said, “See,
mom, told you it was way better than you thought.” He also let me know that he
would be moving to Spirit Lake when he was an adult, which I found rather sweet.
Of course, I am hoping this inclination fades and he stays in California! I
would share a photo, but I’m not sure it will really turn out well in print in
the newspaper.

On July 5, I left Spirit Lake and descended at LAX
Airport. What’s wonderful about getting away on a vacation is that it truly
makes you appreciate your own life and schedule. That old adage, “You can never
go home, again,” is absolutely true. Though we may miss our childhood and our
immediate family, age and time will manage to prevent you from truly returning.
And, I must add, for the first time in my life I understand that saying. Let’s
just say, driving back to San Diego, while the ocean glimmered to the west of
the freeway, I was one enthusiastic girl to return home to
California.

Around Town

On July 2, Rancho Santa Fe’s piano man
Randy Beecher celebrated his birthday at Mille Fleurs with fans and local
residents. Hope it was a wonderful day, Randy! Thanks for adding so many
wonderful memories to my life as well. Also, just in case you haven’t heard,
Mille Fleurs is launching a “Singles Night” on the first Thursday of each month.

So if you are single and you are looking to mingle, this is the place to
be in Rancho Santa Fe on the first Thursday of each month. If you would like

In town on July 3, The Pan American Cup Finals were held at the San Diego Polo field.
The weekend event included a featured band, the “classic divot stomp” like in
the movie, “Pretty Woman,” and prizes for guests. Featured here in the winner
photo are Krista Bonaguidi, Chris Collins, Mariano Fassetta, and Alvaro Tadeo
(holding his daughter, Valentina).

Also featured from that day are the
publishers of FINE Magazine, Heather and John Winfield. It looks like
that was an amazing event for the locals here in San Diego. For more information

On
July 6, I received some wonderful news from my favorite bed and breakfast in the San Diego area, Jamul Haven. If you are looking for a “Stay-cation,” this is a
five-star International B&B you must check out.

The owners, William Roetzheimand Marianne are wonderful, inviting and really take amazing care of their guests. Right now they are offering a promotion: buy two-week nights and receive one free until the end of the year. Here is their website: http://http://www.jamulhaven.com/.

I stayed with them for my 39th birthday last year and since thenI receive their monthly newsletters, which I just love reading.

Also, on Aug. 6, Jamul Haven B&B will be hosting a reading by James Reynolds, “The
Shakespeare You Never Knew,” a parody. For more information visit the website listed above. Here is an excerpt from a column I wrote in 2010 regarding my stay at Jumal Haven:

(The following excerpt is from the B&B Journal I wrote in while I stayed at Jamul Haven).

February 20th, 2010

Dear Bill and Mariann,

Machel at Jamal Haven for her birthday in 2010

I am sitting in the white furry bathrobe I found hanging in the closet. I am reading your magazines on Victorian homes and relaxing, while my husband is having the most peaceful sleep. For a bit, I hung out in the Angel House kitchen and ate the delicious snacks I found in the refrigerator. I drank the milk and ate the banana. Then I called my mother and told her I was having the best birthday of my life. We haven’t even left the Peacock Room because we love it so much. We had forgone dinner in town because this time is too precious at your beautiful B&B and I don’t want to waste it by eating at a typical restaurant. My heart is quieted by the stillness and history of this room. Time feels trapped here and I am so glad to have found “Jamul Haven.”

“Sometimes dreams do come true,” is what I said to my husband tonight. Thank you for having us stay here this weekend. You deserve more blessings because you have blessed others by restoring such a wonderful historic landmark. God Bless you Always.

Sincerely, Machel Penn Shull and Robin

This was my entry the weekend of my birthday at a Bed and Breakfast I had found on the Internet. Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you. You don’t realize there is an ache in your heart until something reminds you it’s still there. That’s what happened to me at this quaint B&B. I found pieces of my childhood inside the walls in Angel House. I sat there on the wraparound porch and watched the clouds drift across this hills. I listened to the birds sing that weekend I turned 39. I reminisced about what I still miss, which is the farm I raised on in Missouri.

What I want to focus on here now with you is what I discovered that weekend. I unearthed the most amazing getaway that is like something out of a Jane Austin novel. We’re talking history and romance restored inside a ranch that was established by Charles Gifford in 1890. He was the first person to can olives successfully for commercial sale in America.

The owners today — Marianne and William Roetzheim — took three years to restore this historic landmark into an already internationally recognized B&B. The Ila-chateau.com, which is an exclusive group of independently owned hotels in Europe, USA, Canada and Southern Africa, rate list only five B&B’s in America and Jamul Haven is one of them.

What you must know is there is a place within reach where you can escape for one or two days. You can find the relaxation you need and pampering in one of the finest B&Bs. You can drive to Jamul, which only 40 minutes to from Del Mar. There you can find reprieve in a forgotten time you cannot find here in San Diego.

Perched up on a hill, above the gated communities near the golf course there, Bill and Marianne have created a retreat where you feel safe from worries in the real world. Their caring nature and their suburb manor as the hosts of Jamul Haven, reassures you that good down to earth people do exist.

After one of the best breakfasts I have had in years — I had frittata, ham, fruit, homemade coffee cake, plus more — you simply don’t want to leave. What I discovered there was a little piece of my soul that still misses the red earth in Missouri. Thank you Bill and Marianne for letting me go home, albeit if only in my dreams.

Remembering Will Norton in “Machel’s Ranch,” featured in the Rancho Santa Fe News

June gloom seems to be lifting and there have been sunny skies here in Rancho Santa
Fe, which has me pondering a story I can’t seem to forget. Do you remember the
devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Mo., at the end of May?If you do,

Remembering Will Norton From Joplin, Missouri

then I’m sure you’ve heard of Will Norton. He was the 18-year-old high school
student that had just graduated less than an hour before his life was tragically
cut short on his way home after the ceremony. While the rest of us here and in
the other parts of the country may complain about the imperfect skies, the
residents in Joplin are trying to rebuild their lives. We’re talking about
grieving over loved ones, while losing your home, your car and your place of
work. Can you imagine? If you have a moment, I encourage you to check out Will’s
facebook page at www.Facebook.com/FindWillNorton.

Will Norton looked like
one of the happiest, enthusiastic individuals I’ve ever seen photographed. The
one thing is for sure, while he was alive, he was smiling from his soul. Let’s
hope we can try and take advantage of each day we are given, and count our many
blessings. Let us remember that smile on Will Norton’s face, and let it help to
remind us to find the joy in our own lives — just like the joy found in many of
the photographs posted on his memorial page. My prayers are with the Joplin
residents, and Will Norton’s family.

On June 11, The Rancho Santa Fe Majors Yankees team played in the Coast Cities Tournament
against the Encinitas Padres. You wouldn’t know it from the smile on these
Yankee players — Patrick, Matthew, and Raul, Jackson — that they had just lost
the game 6-7 — as evidenced by this photograph taken after the game.

Why the smiles? After playing an average season, this team recovered and played
competitively in the tournament, making it three games before losing that day.
Congrats to these boys for coming back, finding spirit and trying their best in
the CCT. The Yankees didn’t win that day, but they definitely finished
well!

On June 12, The San Diego Polo Club held their opening day bash.
One of my favorite residents in the Ranch, Elaine Gallagher, celebrated in style
with family and friends. She was kind enough to share this gorgeous photo of her
with Kathy Herington, standing in front of just one of the many Ferraris on
display.

Opening Day in Del Mar for San Diego Polo-Elaine Gallagher and friend

Polo ponies and red Ferraris — that sounds like a scene right
out of “Pretty Woman,” but happening right here in our own neighborhood! If you
want to share in the glamour and enjoy polo events, check out

social loop.

On June 13, The AAA Del Mar Scrappers made it to the final
four in the Coast Cities Tournament! Featured here are two of the Scrappers
players, Holden MacDonald, and Grayson Le Rose. These boys had an amazing season
and are definitely champions for doing so well in the tournament and for having
an excellent season. Thank you Meredith for sharing this photo in this issue!
Congrats on a wonderful year in baseball. For inquiring minds that may want to
know, Holden is the grandson of Ranch resident Violet MacDonald.

Rancho Santa Fe Majors-White Sox winn Coast Cities Tournament-2011

15, The Rancho Santa Fe White Sox Majors team won the Coast Cities Tournament
against the Encinitas LL Reds team. Featured here is a photo of the White Sox.
Thank you, to Jason Barry for allowing me to share this wonderful photo in the

Majors won the Coast Cities Tournament. To see more of these photos and find out
which players made the All Star Team, check out the

The next day, more exciting
news happened in baseball. The Rancho Penasquitos Pony league Marlins team won
their championship game. Ranch resident Matthew Sorge actually competed in two
leagues this year, while having two games a day! Wow, now that’s what I call
All-Star Commitment. Congrats to all of the Marlins for winning their
championship game. As a little league mom, I had to share these victories and
updates for all of the residents and families to see. A big thanks to all of the
coaches in these leagues for taking time out of your schedule to help make this
season a memorable one for all of the players.

On June 17, Cheryl Wilcox,
R. Roger Rowe’s head secretary, worked her last day of school in the Rancho
Santa Fe School District. After 18 years, Cheryl is retiring. I will be sad to
see her go. Cheryl has always been a tremendous help to me if I ever needed any
information, or needed help with something. Thank you Cheryl for being so
wonderful always, and I hope you enjoy your retirement. I am sure many will miss
you. On June 20, The Rancho Santa Fe Rotary inducted Bill Chenoweth as a new
member of the organization. He is featured here in the column with Katie Hawkes
and Patrick Galvin. Thank you, for sharing the photo. I’m sure you know that the
Rancho Santa Fe Rotary is an amazing organization that helps out many, many
different charities through their tireless efforts.

Sophie Kinsella, “Confessions of a Shopaholic Series”

With summer only one week away, I must share with my readers one of my private joys.
One that allows me to lighten-up during my own weekly routine: When in doubt,
pick up a book and find the ultimate escape at your fingertips. (For you
technology savvy individuals like my son, this suggestion can also include a
Kindle or a Nook.) Recently, I discovered a remarkable writer that has had quite
a run of success — Sophie Kinsella.

My favorite Chick Lit Series -Ever- "A Must Read!"

From her popular series,
“Confessions of a Shopaholic,” to one of her recent novels, “Twenties Girl,” I
haven’t had this much fun reading in ages. Laugh-out-loud funny is the best way
to describe one of her books. I seriously ponder how I can manage to squeeze a
day in my room with the drapes open to the outside world, while drinking my
coffee and reveling in one of the novels with hours of undisturbed reading
time.

Trust me, if you are looking to find a marvelous quick read for an
upcoming beach excursion, you must check out her website for more of her novels.
Here is the link: sophiekinsella.co.uk/. And, just in case inquiring minds want
to know, Sophie Kinsella began her career as a financial journalist in London.
Happy reading this summer!

On May 22nd, I I received an e-mail from
Tracy Williams regarding the Olivenhain 4-H Club.  As a past
president of a 4-H group in Southern Missouri, I know first-hand how wonderful
this club is for members and the families involved. The officers of the
Olivenhain 4-H club woke up early to help serve breakfast at Father Joe’s
Village in downtown San Diego. How does 5 a.m. sound as the meeting time? Now
that’s impressive.

I’ve included a photo of all of the local 4-H members
that dedicated their early morning Sunday to helping serve the less fortunate
here in San Diego.  They did everything from serving breakfast to stocking the
food areas, to packing treats, and even cleaning up and taking out the garbage.
Tracy, thank you for sharing this wonderful accomplishment with the RSF
Community.  If anyone deserves to have their photo in the paper this week, it’s
this inspiring group featured here in my column.

On May 28, I attended the Yankees game at Richardson Field in Rancho Santa Fe. My son plays on the

year. I have featured a beautiful photo of Lucy with her mom, Nancy Rickerson,
for this issue.  They were kind enough to allow me to photograph them that
day. This will be Lucy’s last year to play baseball, because she is focusing
more on soccer for next year. Well, let me tell you Lucy, the game of baseball
will miss you and don’t forget what a true pro you are at this sport, too.  I
loved watching you excel in baseball this year and doing justice to the female
gender when it comes to women competing with men. Excellent job Lucy!

OnJune 1, The Rancho Santa Fe R. Roger Rowe School held its open house on a
glorious sunny day in the Ranch. Parents and students enjoyed the beautiful new
campus as everyone walked around meeting teachers, while checking out the
classroom work. I ran into Lisa McVay and snapped this really exceptional photo
of her with her son Nick that day. I have also featured my son with his 5th
grade teacher, Jennifer Easbey. Also, thank you to all of the parents that
donate their time to help out at the school. Your hard work is much
appreciated.

On June 4, The Helen Woodward’s elegant Broadway Tails event
took place in the arena area of the Woodward center. I helped Lemon Twist owner
(and my mother-in-law) Katie Shull make over 800 chocolate covered strawberries
that day prior to the event. Believe it or not, this is one of my favorite
events of the year. This is my fourth year to help out. Her business was just
one of the many sponsors that donated their time and effort in helping raise
money for Helen Woodward’s amazing organization.

At the event that evening I loved seeing everyone in the Ranch. Rosie Gross, Dixie Courtney,
Tricia O’Brian, and the Fetzers from Cielo are just a few of the familiar faces
I featured here from that night. I have also featured a photo of Laurel McCrink
with her sister Katie Shull. Thanks for including me Katie! I always end up
having so much fun on this special day. And, to Dixie Courtney, thank you for
being one of my readers! Please contact me with any fabulous stories you might
want to share for this summer. It was a pleasure meeting you that
evening.

Rancho Santa Fe Columnist, Machel Penn Shull “Remembering a Dear Friend”

Last year my good friend died in April. Heidi Cruz was only 37 when pancreatic cancer
ended her beautiful life. I want to remember her this month and send warm wishes
to all of Heidi’s sisters and family members. I had met Heidi from the newspaper
business a few years before. Her spirit was fun, exotic and intoxicating to be
around. Watching her leave this earth last spring was one of the hardest things
I have witnessed during my life thus far. She didn’t deserve to die young. So
why did she? I don’t know about you, but I try to find reasons to understand
that which we cannot. I try and dig deep to face those hard issues that don’t
make sense. The answers are not always there, but sometimes from searching you
can find solace. At least that’s how it can be for me.

Beautiful Heidi Cruz with good friend Denny Fallon

My wish for Heidi is she is now finally free from pain. I hope that she is smiling and
watching over all of us that cling to her memory. I hope that the sunshine has
found her permanently. She was a “good egg” as they say. She may not be here
with us in the flesh, but her spirit is alive and remembered by all of those
that loved her. I have included a photo of my good friend Denny Fallon with
Heidi, which was taken a few months before she became ill. I felt this
photo truly captured the Heidi I will always remember and love. I still miss you
my friend.

Around town

What better way to go out and
celebrate life but on tax day? On April 15 my husband and I ended up in the
heart of town at Mille Fleurs that Friday night. How wonderful to see the
restaurant crowded with patrons and residents again. I ran into Stan and his
lovely girlfriend, Oxana, hanging out at the piano bar, while Randy Beecher was
singing some familiar tunes. I asked them if they would pose for a quick photo
for the column that night. Luckily for me, they said yes! Stan and Oxana looked
fabulous together on their night out on the town. Thanks for the lovely
photo.

On April 18, I received some wonderful news from the Rancho Santa
Fe Rotary. Torrey Pines High School senior Charlie Reed, was presented with one
of Rotary International’s highest honors, a Paul Harris Fellow. Her hard work
fundraising toward the Water for Sudan nonprofit drilling wells is definitely
worth sharing. Each year Charlie has organized a theater workshop in which she
has raised more than $10,000 dollars. The money also goes to El Faro Orphanage,
ShelterBox, Sr. Ethel’s work in Missionvale, South Africa and Lance Armstrong’s
charity, Livestrong. I must add that Charlie Reed was also Torrey Pines High
School’s homecoming queen this year! She will be attending Berkeley College this
fall. Congratulations Charlie. You definitely deserve to have the spotlight on
you for all of your amazing achievements.

On April 21, the SMARTY San

Ranch Realtor Priscilla Wood at the SMARTY event in La Jolla

Diego organization held their event at the Madison Gallery in La Jolla. SMARTY
is a networking group for women in business. Local Ranch real estate agent
Priscilla Wood is one of the leaders here in San Diego. I have included a couple
of photos from that evening in La Jolla. Elise Muhawi was also there, and Lorna
York, the founder and CEO of Madison Gallery. On the top of their website, the
logo reads, “We Mean Business.” I like that. If you are a female and run your
own business, this definitely would be a group to check out. Visit
smartypeople.com. Amy Swift Crosby is the founder of this wonderful
organization, which promotes women to succeed. Thank you, Priscilla for letting
me know about this exciting night.

On April 23, I was at Lemon Twist
Fruit stand, which is located right across Cielo, helping my husband with his
customers. Two lovely longtime residents of the Ranch — Janice Rosenbranz and
Pat Storm — stopped by and bought some strawberries and some other organic
produce. When Janice found out that Robin and I were married, she exclaimed,
“You are really lucky you know to marry this guy!” I said, “I know, I feel the
same way,” with a huge smile across my face.

Robin Shull with Pat Storm and friend at Lemon Twist Fruitstand

How sweet Janice and Pat were that
day. They shared  their recollections on Lemon Twist and all of the years they
had been going there. They were so happy to see it back finally after the Witch
Creek Fire in 2007. I took a photo of them with my husband, Robin. Sometimes
life reminds you in simple ways of your own blessings.

The Rancho Santa Fe Book Cellar is having their half-off book sale
on May 5 and May 6. This wonderful jewel of a bookstore is one of my favorite
highlights of my Saturday mornings. Every Saturday I find a new book to read for
that week, while browsing peacefully among the many shelves in the Book Cellar.
Recently, I found “The Ice Queen,” by Alice Hoffman, which was a sublime novel.
Take my advice, make sure you support Rancho Santa Fe’s only local bookstore by
donating any used or new books that could be cluttering your shelves. The Book
Cellar and the RSF Library will benefit from the half-off sale. For more
information, call (858) 756-4780. You can bet I will be there.

“Machel’s Ranch,” featured Rancho Santa Fe News

Twelve years ago I moved from Los Angeles to Rancho Santa Fe. I remember driving down
Via de la Valle for the first time toward our new home in the Ranch thinking how
beautiful the eucalyptus trees were hanging over the road. I was pregnant with
my son and driving this huge U-haul with some of my past cluttered in the back
in packed boxes. I had no idea then what to expect. I had never heard of Rancho
Santa Fe. To be honest, I thought it sounded like a place in New Mexico. Tears
were streaming down my cheeks as I drove quietly to my new home. I must admit, I
was apprehensive and afraid. What kind of life would I find in San
Diego?

Jill Sorge and Columnist-Machel Penn Shull-fast friends since 1999

As I share with you my son’s 11th birthday
celebration, I am also remembering my beginnings in the Ranch. Now looking back,
I wish I could have whispered to my younger self, “You just hit the jackpot, but
you don’t know it yet!” That’s how I feel today. Sometimes it takes a while to
discover a place and to understand its own worth on our journey. “Presents” can
also come in the form of change. In the beginning, losing what we know might be
hard. Sometimes what we don’t want to happen can turn out be a blessing in
disguise. Celebrating my son’s life here in the Ranch and getting to know this
wonderful community has been truly a gift in my life.
Around
Town
On March 29, some lucky Ranch residents attended the much
anticipated Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour at San Diego State’s Viejas Arena.
Wow, I must say as a Lady Gaga fan myself, that’s thrilling! I have included a
picture of Ali Acosta, Dylan Mulvaney, Tony Sorge, Lauren Sorge and Kassidy
Brown. I’ve always found it odd how Lady Gaga calls her fans her “little
monsters,” but the term has stayed and it seems they love it. Thanks for sharing
the photo.
On April 3, Ranch resident Jackson Bernard Tuck (my son!)
celebrated his 11th birthday party at the Ultra Zone Laser Tag down in San
Diego. I had the good fortune of driving two of his buddies — Brett Vitale and
Brandon Catledge — along with Jackson down to the party.

Jackson Tuck's 11th Birthday party in San Diego

We met his other good
friends Matthew Sorge, Chloe Temple, Atiana Smith, Holden and Reese MacDonald at
the location. I included an exuberant group photo of them from that day and one
of me with Jill Sorge — my very first friend in Rancho Santa Fe. Thanks to all
of his good friends for coming out and making the day perfect.

On April 10, I received a phone call from my good friend Jill and her daughter Lauren
Sorge. They were headed down to see the overflow at the dam at Lake Hodges,
which has been a local tourist attraction lately.

Later that day, I received aspectacular shot just down below the overspill at the base of the dam. I just had to share it with my readers. And, if you haven’t heard of the mysterious
monster Hodgee, it’s a fun tidbit of information to know. Just like the infamous
Loch Ness body of water in the Scottish Highlands, our very own Lake Hodges may
have its own monster living in the dark crevices down below. You must check out this website that documents the history of its sightings at:  http://www.hodgee.com/.   I love mystery stories like that.

On April 13, I stopped by my favorite coffee shop
in Rancho Santa Fe — Caffe Pasitono in Fairbanks. This will be the seventh
summer that owner Tim Cusac has delivered gourmet coffee, pastries and
sandwiches to the Ranch. A popular stop right after school is the Rancho Santa
Fe Sandwich Shop, which is also owned by Tim. You can see the children lined up
outside in the courtyard waiting for soft serve frozen yogurt. Congrats, Tim on
bringing so many lovely choices for the residents. One of my favorite items at
his Sandwich Shop is his freshly made chicken salad. I must add, it’s “divine”
as my sister would say.
Save the Dates On April 28, my favorite writer — New York Times best selling
author Luanne Rice will be here locally at Warwick’s Book Store, located at 7812
Girard Avenue in La Jolla at 7:30 p.m. Luanne Rice will be in town promoting her
newest novel, “Silver Boat,” which is published by Penguin. If you are an avid
book lover or loyal fan of Luanne’s, this will be a night you must attend.
Luanne Rice has written 29 novels and many of her books have been made into
films. The New York Times Book Review has referred to her writing as “Exciting,
emotional, and terrific.” I couldn’t agree more. I have also featured a photo of
Luanne Rice here in my column. For more information on this event, visit to
warwicks.com, listed under upcoming events.

“Machel’s Ranch,” featured in the Rancho Santa Fe News “Celebrate life”

You know that famous Beatles song, “With a Little Help from My Friends”? Those
lyrics rang loud and clear for my birthday weekend. I must say, I wasn’t really
looking forward to my special day. In fact, I was trying hard not to even
celebrate because I have been grieving over the loss of losing some of my own
friends from last year. However, it pays to have a someone you love that helps
encourage you to remember all of your many blessings even though life might not
be the way we wish it was just one year ago.

Columnist Machel Penn Shull celebrating her birthday with her husband and Inlaws

I did get by with some help
from my friends. To all of them that showed up last minute at Mille Fleurs,
thank you for reminding me that life is too short not to celebrate and it’s fine
to find a smile when we miss someone we love. Rancho Santa Fe still holds an
enchanted feeling at under the stars that reminds me when I am walking down
Paseo Delicias, I am lucky to be part of this community.

Around
Town

On Feb. 25, Helen Woodward was visited by Ron Oliver from EDC. He
took the time to go over the importance of recycling with the Critter Campers
that week at Helen Woodward.

I have included a photo of them from that
day.

Helen Woodward's Camp Critters 2011

Some other important news happening there is the event chairs this year
have been named for the Spring Fling “Broad Way Tails.” They are Kerry Payne and
Charlene Hooker. The title sponsors are EDCO and the Fish Market. Don’t forget
to by your tickets for one of the main events that happens each year in Rancho
Santa Fe. Go to Animalcenter.org listed under “Events” to purchase your tickets
for June 4, 2011. Also featured here is Charlene Hooker with her dog, Dot. What
a darling photo.

Later that evening, I had dinner with my in-laws at
Firenze, and then headed to Mille Fleurs to meet my friends to celebrate my 40th
birthday. It was sort of last minute, but the stars were aligned and the evening
was truly special to me. Randy Beecher — who has been a consistent part of Mille
Fleurs for many years — sang happy birthday, while I enjoyed all of my good
friends’ company. Thank you to Holly Manion, Krista Lafferty, Tom and Karian
Forsyth and Melissa Willams just to name a few for attending on such short
notice. I have included three photos from that evening, which as you can see
captures the fun we all had that evening.

On Feb. 27, I met my good
friends Bianca and Tony Macaluso in downtown Del Mar under the shining sun.
After the heavy rains, Del Mar sure did feel glorious that day. To my surprise,
Tony and Bianca had set up a massage for me at L’Auberge’s spa. But first we
headed to the beach for a brief walk near the cliffs by the train tracks.
Afterward I left the two lovebirds to their own private stroll near the rolling
waves. When I arrived at L’Auberge Spa, I met Pia Romano, a licensed massage
therapist, and I then spent a private hour with in her good care. Well, if you
are looking to unwind or need to de-stress, this is the place to visit here
locally. From the soothing colors on the walls to the ritzy steam room, I felt
completely rested and rejuvenated. What a wonderful way to turn 40! Call the spa
directly to request Pia for your own personal massage at (858)
793-6493.

Later that evening, Bianca Macaluso shared with me that they
had attended an Oscar party in Del Mar at David and Becky Vigil’s home. This
will be the 20th consecutive year the Vigil’s have celebrated the night of the
Oscars with friends. I have included a lovely photo from that evening that
captures some of the guests that attended, who are from left, Tony and Bianca
Macaluso, the hosts David and Beck Vigil, and Debbie and Mike Chapman from
Orange County.

On Feb. 28, the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary Club presented
awards to the Students of the Month at Roger Rowe School. Featured here from
that day is Rotary President Patrick Galvin with the Students of the Month
Garrett Peterson, Skylar Brown, Tess Cimino and Superintendent Lindy Delaney and
Kate Swanson. Congratulations on this prestigious award. Thanks so much for
sending the photo for this week’s column.
