Book Review of “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett
http://www.kathrynstockett.com/
I watched the movie first, which usually it is the other way around. With that being said, you would think that this would be not as exciting since I know what happens. And, yes, I loved the movie. I Loooved it. (Do forgive on the extra o’s in love. Sometimes in print, a little help brings life words!)However, the book is absolutely amazing. The pace, the characters, the sense of urgency, the food, the plot. Genius. Some things are worth fighting for in this life.
I am thrilled Kathryn Stockett never gave up after 60 rejections and believed in her story. Some stories are born into this world through a voice,a person, a moment, an inspiration just like this one. A story about meanness, kindness and the power of human beings standing up together to defeat an oppressive world.
http://www.more.com/kathryn-stockett-help-best-seller
I hope she writes many more to come. What I loved also in the book was her personal account of her private life and what originally inspired her soul to write this book.
With Four Academy Oscar nominations, how exciting for Kathryn Stockett to rocket to the moon on her soulful and “must never give up attitude.” She is an exemplary role model for us all.
Please read this book. It’s not one to skip.
Why is this book amazing? Character development, voice, and plot. The characters had something to lose and gain in the weaving of the story. With high stakes, how can you put that down? What do you have to lose if you stop reading ”The Help,” by Kathryn Stockett?
Everything!
What drives a reader to read? The must knowing the conclusion to their character’s ending in the novel.
Here is one of the other jackets of the book before it was a movie:
http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/60-rejection-letters-didnt-stop-kathryn-stockett-and-her-bestseller-the-help
In her words: Kathryn Stockett: ‘I will never truly understand what it felt like to be a black woman in the South.’
Well, this may be true, but Kathryn Stockett does exactly that in this amazing story women working together on their own personal, private mission to be known and understood in this fictional tale of “The Help.”

Mackenzie Thorpe is available at Legends Gallery in La Jolla, California USA. To find out more about this piece you can schedule an appointment with “Michelle.”
That would be me. Most that read my name as Machel do not know that my name is pronounced Michelle, or truly Maachel. Creative birth name from my Mom.
However, this piece is one of my favorites in the gallery. I can see the influences of two of his favorite artists reflected in “Time Without Shadows.” Rothko and Van Gogh are two of Mackenzie Thorpe’s favorite painters, which he mentions when interviewed. I love both of these artists as well.
“Time Without Shadows” offers hope, reality and a moment when time can stand still during our lifetime. Do you know what time frame I am referring to when studying this painting?
Call 858-456-9900 for more details and remember to ask for Fine Art Consultant “Michelle.”
Remember to support the arts. Remember to be creative, smart and most of all have some fun along the way. Life can be incredibly short sometimes so make sure you are enjoying your daily routine.
Rancho Santa Fe News, “Machel’s Ranch” January 2012 ~ Adopt a Pet and Stay healthy this year
On New Year’s Eve, my beloved kitty died. What a devastating way to start the New Year of 2012. With much reflection and love for my cat that I have had for 8 years, I must tell you this moment hurt deeply, but also helped me realize the beauty in our every day gifts. My son, husband—plus my family was in town—grieved for the loss of our pet. We felt lucky to have her for as long as we did. This experience was once again a reminder to me how precious time and life is each day. This was unexpected.
What I can tell you as a farm girl from Missouri? My kitty Audrey had a tremendous life. I do know that I never took her for granted. I tried extra hard to always let her know how much she was loved by me. Having many kitties over the years, you can only guess that this is a familiar feeling (grieving when they die) that I have adjusted to with time. If you are a pet owner, than I am sure you know what it feels like to lose your beloved animal. With that being said, we have adopted a rescue kitty that has been saved from a “high kill” shelter. What I have learned from this traumatic week is there are so many animals out there that need a home. Please adopt an animal this year in 2012. If you can’t do that because you already have too many pets, please donate to an animal rescue shelter. Life is gift and so was my beautiful kitty, Audrey. Make time this year in 2012 to give love to an animal that will also fill your life with much joy and comfort. Happy New Year Rancho Santa Fe. I adopted my kitty from a wonderful woman named Lonnie that devotes much of her life to saving animals. Here is her contact information: Fur.ever@yahoo.com. Thanks Lonnie for being a ‘real live angel’ to animals in need.

On December 26th, I decided to capture the beauty of winter in Rancho Santa Fe. I pulled over (I do this often and it drives my son nuts!) by my son’s school to walk the trails near the Rancho Santa Fe golf course. The the naked blue sky filled the air with perfection, as the autumn colors of reds and yellows shined in the bright sunlight. The walking trail had peaks of light beaming across the leaves, as I strolled next to the golf course photographing the trees. Here is one photo from that day. The trees look beautiful in the Ranch right now. This is also an excellent way to stay in shape; take a two mile walk three times a week. Don’t forget to make time for yourself in the New Year. I do!

We sell Rockwell, Chagall, Miro, Dr. Seuss, Mackenzie Thorpe and De La Nuez to mame just a few of the artists we carry. Here is a wonderful photograph from that day.
Coffee or Tea? by Machel Penn Shull~ FINE Magazine, January 2012
Coffee or Tea? That lately seems to be the question for many. If you are a lover of both like me than the idea is to choose when and where for your daily ritual for one or for both. Coffee is the way I start of my day, but tea is my afternoon delight.

Wow. I just started reading Maeve Binchy again. A masterful storyteller. She tells the most amazing dramas of just normal people set usually in the back drop of Ireland somewhere. This book was so vivid. I hated to end it, yet could not read this book fast enough. Page turner. And, Clare–the main character reminded me slightly of Jane Eyre, that sort of fierce determination that made you love her and root victoriously for her character, while the story unfolds around her. Brilliant. My favorite book of her thus far. Close second-”Tara Road.”

The Velveteen Soul
Sometimes ‘being honest’ just gets in the way of truth. Do you know what I mean by that? I’m sure you had those moments, too. Placating others to keep life at an even tempo. Why discuss hard issues if we can just keep a smile on our face? Let me sum it up for you. Life is not meant to be a tea party, with pleasantries and thin cucumber sandwiches.
I don’t want to get into any specifics, but this situation has compelled my inner warrior to share with you something deeper with you this week than my lighter write on skinny models. An anguish or a hurt can remind us of what we lost along the way in our own personal journey, especially when you love your friend. I turn inward and become reflective, which usually affects my dreams when I am sleeping.
Like last night, I dreamt of the past. I remembered how last year my Great Aunt Leota died on the same day as my Grandma Lula did. When I awoke, I thought about loved ones that I have lost. I thought about others that have lost family members recently, too. I thought about all of these deeper issues we hate to feel and touch. But life does not always turn out the way we had hoped. With that being said, I reach out to my readers and say only this:
Dare to be real to someone that matters to you! Share your heart and soul with ordinary people, like the homeless you see, give them only a dollar if you have one if and you have less, at least acknowledge their presence.
I say dive into the deep blue sea. Sink beneath the murky water of you subconscious and visit what you have buried there. Seek you weakness, your anger, your muse, your nemesis, you battleground…Go there and fight. Make life anything but boring. Dream of the hidden things in-between. Reach out into the darkness and seek and if there is no response keep reaching until you pull yourself through to the other side, to the place you can feel in your heart, you can see, you can touch, you can be, dare to pull yourself to the other side without the aid of anyone. What I speak of deals with the battling of will and soul and mind converging into one moment that can exist then fade. I speak of real; I speak of that “Velveteen Rabbit” bunny.
I speak of soul.
Do something soulful and watch your world expand and open. Be free of judgment. Be free of what you might lose if you succeed. Be free to ask for more. Ask for more and receive. When a fire comes and destroys a neighborhood it might take two or three years to rebuild but don’t give up hope. . .Grab this life and do what you can. You have your very own story to write. If you don’t like the way it’s going, you can always change ‘plots’ midstream.
You can. Ask me I know. Be bold. Flutter around. Be vulnerable to at least one soul walking this planet. Live and spread joy everywhere. This life is in dire need of a soul to take the higher road.
This world is in need of you to be–real.

Coronado & Bid Time Return
Did you know you can elope on Coronado Island for less than $1500.00? This includes the backdrop of the world famous Hotel Del in the background, along with rose petals sprinkled across the sand. Can you see it? The bride and groom, white wedding dress, black tux, saying “I do,” in one of the most romantic destinations just on the other side of the Coronado Bridge.
Sometimes we forget the best escapes are only a car ride away. This one, however, happens to be local. North County residents can become submerged in the “wealth triangle,” you know, La Jolla, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe, while overlooking one of the finest jewels in the most southern point of California.
If you were to ask the residents of this quant sophisticated beach town with rich history and small town values if they felt left out, there would probably be a resounding sigh of relief that their prestigious community is still truly is a world unto itself. The late, great novelist, Richard Matheson, knew this more than anyone when he chose the Hotel Del Coronado to reside in, while he penned one of the most beloved love stories, “Bid Time Return.”
This tragic love story is about a man that falls in love with a photograph of famous actress in the late 1800’s. He then manages against all odds to travels back in time, to whisper the words, “Is it you?” If this sounds eerily familiar, it’s because this book’s title when adapted into a screenplay was changed to “Somewhere in Time.” The movie starred Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. Many do not know that Coronado Island’s timeless energy laid forth the foundation of this classic love story. There are sacred stories like this one scattered across the sands of Coronado Island.
When searching for the answers, always seek the best. That’s exactly what Fine Magazine did when choosing Ruth Ann Fisher as the feature for Coronado’s quick Q. & A. Q. When did you start Selling Real Estate in Coronado?
A. I started selling real estate in 2000 after my husband was transferred here with the Navy. I had previously worked in Florida with a mortgage bank handling their foreclosures and REO’s.
Q. How has last year’s recession affected the housing market on Coronado ? A. The prices have obviously gone down but not to the extent of other communities. Coronado has unique qualities that have helped us weather this economic storm. With limited boundaries, great schools and a Mayberry charm, Coronado will always draw homeowners, second home buyers and investors.
Q. What are the benefits to living on Coronado Island as apposed to San Diego ? A. Besides what was written above, an incredible low crime rate.
Q. What encouraging words do you have for home buyers that are looking to invest in Coronado Island ? A. If you have been considering a purchase in Coronado or have been waiting for the right time, Buy Now! Prices are lower than they have been in many years. There is a good selection of homes available however, many of the buyers who have been on the fence have started to make moves since the first of the year and our inventory is starting to go down.
Q. What would you say to entice a buyer to choose Coronado over let’s say Rancho Santa Fe or La Jolla ?
A. Coronado is a lifestyle choice. It is a charming smaller coastal town just over the bridge from a metropolitan city with all it has to offer. For commuters, we are 15 minutes, from the airport and a ferry ride from the train station. Our family has even taken our bikes on the ferry and then caught the train to Santa Barbara for the weekend. We also have parades on the 4th of July and at Christmas and we have concerts in the park each Sunday during the summer where everyone comes out and enjoys their picnic dinner with family, friends and neighbors. To quote from the Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home”. And, there’s no place like Coronado .
Thank-you Ruth, for sharing your thoughts with Fine Magazine. Just remember the next time you might need a ‘great romantic escape’ is only a skyline and a bridge away. To quote Richard Matheson, “Ah; a bridge ahead, “I’ll take it. I don’t care where it leads so long as it is away from this. Coronado says the sign. Driving straight into the sun…”

Old Town San Diego “Bazaar Del Mundo”
Bazaar Del Mundo, a hidden treasure in San Diego– Originally published in FINE Magazine in October 2009.
“
Don’t be afraid of the rattlesnake in Southern Mexico,” was the opening line to a song at the Bazaar Del Mundo, Santa Fe Market Art show. The Mexican band began to play flamenco dance music as I strolled between the isles at colorful arts and crafts exhibit on one of the last beautiful weekends in San Diego. I felt like I had traveled back in time, while I admired all of the Indian pottery, turquoise jewelry and other distinct Southwestern influenced artists.
Southern Californian residents sometimes forget to venture outside of their comfort zone. With the beach always the main attraction, it’s easy overlook the local ‘hidden jewels’ that exist just around the corner from where we live. For example, Bazaar Del Mundo marketplace is a wonderful way to spend time with a loved one or family member besides your typical day by the pool.
On this particular weekend, I skipped the crowded beach, crossed the street in Old Town San Diego and headed down Taylor Street. My little adventure let me to Bazaar Del Mundo, a beautiful marketplace located adjacent to the main square in Old Town. The 22nd Annual Santa Fe Market was being held that day, which featured crafts and arts of Southwest and Native Americans. The courtyard came to life under the shaded trees as I admired all of the paintings, pottery and other distinctive hand crafted trinkets.
On one corner of the marketplace was an artist called, Desert Dreamer. His art captured beautiful desert photography, Spanish influenced settings. The next art booth exhibited Marie Barbera’s hand-painted Indian sculptures depicting their way of life. I captured one photo of an Indian Chief that stood tall and majestic among the other sculptures.
Some of the artists included were the Navajo, Cherokee, Hopi, Pima, Isleta Pueblo and Santa Domingo Pueblo Indian tribes. Other artists there came from different parts of the United States, such as Arizona and New Mexico. I had no idea that I would find so much diversity and culture in one special corner near Old Town.
The next time you are planning your weekend, check-out this colorful marketplace called Bazaar Del Mundo. You never know what event you will find hidden beneath the shaded trees off of Taylor Street.

One might wonder whether Yves Saint Laurent had any inclination when he submitted three sketches in 1952 to a contest in Paris that he would become part of the “Holy French Trinity of Fashion,” along side Coco Chanel and Christian Dior? If he didn’t, at least one person did: Michel de Brunhoff, the editor in chief of Vogue magazine in Paris. Brunoff suggested to the young contestant pursue a career as a fashion designer. After placing only third place and listening to some sound advice, three initials would soon be become recognized as one of the world’s most influential and groundbreaking designers YSL. Happy New Year in 2012, “Dare to be the Nice Guy in 2012″
What do I want to tell you on New Year’s Day in 2012? Life is a gift. Don’t waste it. Life is precious. Don’t be a whiner. Life is amazing. Don’t be predictable. Life is a gift from above, and yes, life hurts sometimes, too. Sometimes we lose those we love, a pet might die, or we move away from friends and family members that we normally see each day.
How to cope? Believe in the goodness this world has to offer. Believe in daily miracles that remind us to be present so we don’t miss them when they happen. Believe in your loved ones. Don’t nag them. Don’t be overly critical. Life is tough enough without someone that we love judging us all the time.
Have faith! Have fun, and find bliss. Force yourself out of your thoughts, so you can recognize the beauty, even in the ordinary things. Don’t be a baby! Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Remember, that just when you think life has hit an all time low, you can still spiral downwards. This may not sound optimistic this last line, but it is indeed true. Why think like that? So you can be aware of how lucky you are each day. Life is wonderful!
Life is gift. I am not going to give you one of those reality checks with out terrible the world we are living in because I don’t believe that one bit. Life is not fair. Yes, it can be cruel. But be brilliant, be bold, dare yourself to march ahead and grab the next bar up on the ladder. Dare to believe in your dreams of impossibility…
There is a house I often see. Each time I drive by, I think, “I’m going to live there one day!” Well, the house is a pretty expensive property. In order for this to happen, some other amazing things might have to happen, too. I may never live there. But what fun is it to dream as a drive by it. Why not think big like Norman Vincent Peale always suggested?
Like good ol’ Clint Eastwood’s character in “Bridges of Madison County” said to Meryl Streep’s character in the kitchen–
“The old dreams were good dreams, too. They might not have all come true, but at least I had them.” (This isn’t verbatim.)
What’s my point. 2012 is our year. Your year. Your thoughts. Your life. Reach out into the unknown and discover the person you’ve always dreamed of becoming. Dare to soar into new heights. Dare to dream impossibilities.
Be kind and loving. Be nice always. You know that saying “Nice guys finished last?” Well, guess what? That’s right. Would you like to know why that doesn’t matter, you know about coming in last bit?” Because the nice guy doesn’t care. The nice person has a heart and is here to make your day better, too and are not just out for themselves.
DARE TO BE NICE in 2012. You might just win a few new friends and find nuggets of goodness hanging from the sky because of your own personality change. Dare to be yourself, and dare to believe in every day miracles.

I don’t want to write any wise suggestions for this year for the New Year. You don’t need them from me anyway. I’m not going to write about art, books or the Book Cellar. I have decided to spare you from all of that and share with my readers little signs that I always look for that inspire me during my day. Call me sappy, call me out there, but life’s too short not to have some fun in the process. It’s sort of like “Slug-bug” for grown-ups. Here are a few signs I often search for that I find a great deal of pizzazz from when they just happen spontaneously to me when I least expect them. I am sure you will see a correlation, so I will just start out with this line: “I have a thing for birds.”
A positive attitude and gold tipped wings~
Happy New Year! As I write this the sound in the room is intensely loud. “Avatar” is captivating the room on the flat screen. However, I am here thinking about today, about life and why it’s important to always have a positive outlook with your thoughts.

man or man in uniform fighting for us to make sure we are able to celebrate freely. Meanwhile, someone has died for us to have this right. Families have grieved over the loss of their loved ones. It is important to remember these facts this season. We must remember those that have sacrificed their souls to make sure that we are still free. I wish for each brave American soldier much love and blessings. Without you, America would be lost. Without your devotion, pride and dedication, how might our country survive? Please, let us unite, stand proud as Americans and remember those who serve and the veterans of the United States this holiday season.

Violet is an active member in the Garden Club here in town and has been featured on several occasion in San Diego Home and Garden Magazine for her own immaculate garden that surrounds her property in Rancho Santa Fe. I have also include a picture-perfect-photo of Holden and Meredith MacDonald, whom are also part of this clan here in the Ranch. Violet is very proud of her family! Thanks for sharing the holiday photos.
smiling from within…Could it be that the Ozark Mountains (where I am from in Missouri) exists out here in California? Well, who knew God’s country was just right around the corner? You would think that someone would alert the media to these things. It seems, I guess, one must discover ‘heaven on earth’ a little later in life. You could say that I’m definitely like Ava Gabor’s character in Green Acres:“Darling I love you, but give me Park Avenue.” I love both. But, trust me, take a drive out past Lake Wohlford one weekend and enter into a valley full of citrus, wild peacocks and avocados. You won’t regret it. Here is a photo I captured of a peacock casually hanging out on the rooftop that weekend.
always thrilled to go their holiday party and this year was no exception. Unfortunately, my family came down with the flu that weekend, so I was only able to stop in briefly to snap a few photos for this week’s issue. Woe to the life of a working girl. (I’m semi-kidding.) Well, what can I tell you? The party was decked out with private waiters, a local musician playing, fine food and champagne flowing over the flute glasses. The guests—that I saw that arrived early—looked smashing in their glittery holiday attire. Oh the joys of the holiday spirit, holiday wonder and how wonderful to have a friend like Karian and Tom. Saturday Evening Post cover, November 21, 1925.
This is Rockwell’s first real sports cover. Baseball appealed to him more than football and, beginning with the l00th anniversary of the game for which he did the July 8, 1939 cover, he painted several memorable scenes which showed baseball greats – Ted Williams, Red Schoendienst – in action, or, more exactly, reaction.
Catching figures in action and more specifically at the moment of impact, as here, is next to impossible because the moment is too fast to freeze. Still, Rockwell has made a success of the moment, causing the ball to fly with the wind that got knocked out of the model, capturing impact without suggesting pain or ineptitude. In the days before the carefully uniformed midget footballers of today, fragments of uniforms were highly prized and worn more as badges of honor than for the protection they might offer players. The old style ball with its lacing – it seemed to have been laced from within by gnomes who lived inside, and stuffing the rubber bladder back in the leather was one of life’s most delicate operations – the helmets and the boots suggest that the last thing Rockwell wants to do is ennoble the gladiatorial contest.

The painting, A Prayer for a Child,
stunning in its vibrant colors and captivating in its galactic point of view,
has been painted from the perspective of one child’s small place in the

prayer accompanies each serigraph.

“Two and A Half Men,” Ashton Kutcher is “Bringing It,” as Charlie Sheen would say~
“Two & A Half Men” Ashton Kutcher and Charlie Sheen
As an avid fan of this show, I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen when Charlie Sheen didn’t come back for this year. All I know is I was tuning in for Charlie Sheen’s rants and what he would say next when the meltdown between CBS and Charlie Sheen occurred earlier this year in 2011.
Why was it that was so intriguing? While many would like to condemn and say absolutely terrible things about Charlie Sheen, there was just some sheer brilliance in his attitude of not letting the world break him even when it was quite obvious he had done many improper things that deserved an apology when it came to his sitcom behavior or lack of, I guess I should say… Most would be for their job back, but there was something just absolutely marvelous in seeing this man say “Take this Job and Shove it” type attitude, while losing millions upon millions in the process. Insanity? Craziness? Maybe, but the good news is
Charlie Sheen is still “bringing it” in his own life, while the new “Two and A Half Men” sitcom is, too. Walden? That guy that washed up on the beach and showed up naked after the funeral? Brilliant writing and funny plot twist. It’s working and I’m still watching and can’t wait for next week’s episode.
Well here were are full throttle into the season and what can I tell you as an avid fan?
#1. I’m still laughing.
#2. I absolutely love Walden’s character. Ashton Kutcher has excellent comedic timing.
#3. Jake Rocks (Angus T. Jones).
#4. Jon Cryer should win an Emmy for his performance this season. His portrayal of Alan is brilliant as always.
#5. I do miss Charlie Sheen, but I’m going with it, you know…
I just hope Ashton’s private life stays personal and off the show. He’s becoming the younger version of Charlie Sheen without even realizing it, I mean on the show of course, that Walden Guy. Lines blur and sitcoms become reality, you know~~.
“Two And A Half Men” don’t miss it this season. It’s truly unpredictable. I can’t believe how the young boy that now is such a cool teenager just totally steals the show with each quip when he’s on. No wonder he’s bringing down the big bucks.
Don’t miss next week’s episode. Walden’s mother is paying him a visit….this should be good.~
Magical Moments this Holiday Season, The Book Cellar, and An Important Mission

If you could go back in time and be a child again would you? I have often heard others ponder their childhood with much warm hearted memories. What was it about being young that seems elusive to us as we find ourselves in a wide open field in the midst of our lives? Could it be that we understand time better or rather recognize with age as we gaze back and remember who we once were? During the holiday season my childhood memories always come back to me, like a flickering images from a movie reel.
I grew up on a farm near Springfield, Missouri. The winters were cold. The pond froze over and we would skate across it in our cowboy boots. Then we would watch our breath rise up to the white sky and blend in with the blanket of snow falling down on us below. The “Us” would be my brother, sister and me. We were pretty tight as kids. We built massive forts in the snow, played a tag game called chicken and fox over the icy pond. I never believed in Santa because we lived on a farm and I knew there was no way he could really fit inside a wood burning stove. We always watched “It was a Wonderful Life” and “Scrooge.” We had “Taffy Pulls!” Live moved slowly when I was young, and I didn’t know as a child that wishes and dreams can sometimes take you away from what you loved the most. So now each season, after the turkey has been served and as families are decorating their homes with mistletoe, I find myself remembering the young girl I was and early my beginnings. This holiday season, remember to look back, count your blessings and be thankful for each season. Sometimes we never know how magical our moments are until they are gone.

CORRECTION: Well, my favorite book store in the whole wide world must hate me! Recently, I realized my serious gaffe after someone pointed out the name on my coffee cup, “Book Tales,” which most of you probably know is in Encinitas. That is a wonderful bookstore, too. However, my favorite bookstore that I try to frequent at least once a week exists just around the corner from the Rancho Santa Fe Library is “The Book Cellar.” Please forgive! My only excuse is I write late night into the early hours of the evening and sometimes mistakes can happen when you do this. So for the record, if you would like to read and buy books in Rancho Santa Fe, “The Book Cellar” is a gem of place. What I do, is always donate the books back, when my room starts to take on too many stacks against the wall or they start falling of my night stand. Make sure you stop in this holiday season for a book as a gift. They have fabulous prices. And, the quiet, still space between the rows of bookshelves just warms your soul.
During the first week of November, Dr. Michael and Lynne Skyhar stopped in at the Lemon Twist Gift & Produce Shop in Rancho Santa Fe. Lynne and Dr. Mike live in the area and were just so wonderful to meet right as dusk was setting across the valley behind the shop. We shared some quick conversation and they were kind enough to let me share this photo in my column that evening. I love meeting new people. Mike and Lynne were very gracious and kind. Thanks for stopping in at Lemon Twist and for reading the column Mike and Lynne. Happy Holidays!
On November 13th, I attended Esther Wong’s Charity fundraising party in Cielo with my best friend, Jill Sorge. The party was hosted by Esther, Taylor, Diane Wong and the Santa Fe Christian India Mission’s team. Part of the proceeds from this event will be included in a check they are presenting in person in India at the Grace Home Orphanage and school. My favorite part of this party was watching the video clip from their last year’s trip over to India last year. If you are interested in helping donate to this charity, here is a link with information: http://www.sfcs.net/about/Pages/why_sfcs.aspx. I have included a beautiful photo of Esther and Taylor Wong from that day.

event, which benefited Rady Children’s Hospital here in San Diego. Look at this fabulous shot that I have included from this event! In the line up, we have Kim Smart—from Smart Interiors, Elaine Gallagher, Ally Wise, Candace Sears, and Jan Doyle-Wehlag. All of these lovely, smart women are business professionals, friends and most of all, they are shopping to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. Well done. Make sure you shop this Christmas or donate extra items that you don’t need to charity in need.
On November 19th, It rained all day in Rancho Santa Fe. But that didn’t stop the Sassy Santa Event that my gal-pal Krista Lafferty organized with the Garden Club. When I stopped by that Saturday there was a massive food truck feeding the shoppers out front, a Santa listening to children’s wish lists, and a plethora of local businesses beating the Black Friday date by one week. Inside the Garden Club, felt festive and warm. I enjoyed strolling the isles and seeing all of the vendor’s merchandise. Here is a photo from that day, too. Congrats to Krista, The Rancho Santa Fe Rotary and to all of those that came out to support local businesses this holiday season. Please continue to “Shop Small” this season, too.

Rancho Santa Fe's Sassy Santa Event was a SMASHING Success for The Rancho Santa Fe Rotary. Meet the Three women that made it happen. But most of all, my gal-pal Krista Lafferty.

Caring for the Soul, Fabulous Birthday Trips Under The Eucalyptus Trees in Rancho Santa Fe
“Machel’s Ranch” The latest happenings Around Town and Inspirational stories featured in the Rancho Santa Fe News
Do you have the courage to be real? Do you show your true colors or are you just one those faking it to fit in on your cul-de-sac? If the latter applies, you are missing out on the fundamental joys of who you are on the inside. Your soul is all you’ve got. And, if you aren’t portraying the “real you,” life will catch up with you eventually. You can never turn back the hands of time. We cannot erase the mistakes of yesterday. If you aren’t being true to yourself, no one else is either. After stepping into the art world recently, I am finding much inspiration from staring deeply at paintings every day. I am finding that textures reveal tones, colors and layers and a story underneath each brushstroke. Our reflection in the mirror is similar to this. What do you see when you look at yourself? Be still in the morning and ask yourself, “What do I love? What would bring me joy? What inspires my inner self?”
Just like a tree, your soul needs nourishment. Trust me, even if you are a parent, you must make adjustments for what you love or one day you could wonder what happened to that 12-year-old with dreams?
So, don’t try to fit in. Take time to make time for you. Life can be incredibly short. Be the person you can be proud of each day. Author Thomas Moore’s book, “Care of the Soul,” deals with this topic. I highly recommend it. After all, life isn’t a dress rehearsal and those “do-gooders” up the street? Trust me, they’re not truly your friends anyway. So make sure you’re at least a good friend to yourself. Because you are worth it!

On Oct. 29, I received some exciting news regarding Santa Fe Christian’s seventh grade flag football team: “ My name is Jason Stewart and I’m a former division one college basketball national champion turned flag football coach! I’m debuting with these guys and I love it.”
The flag football team helps prepare the boys for high school football. According to their website, “We view the middle school flag football program as a farm system for the Santa Fe Christian High School varsity program because we run an 8-Man version of the Wing-T offense that Coach Nick Ruscetta teaches … we are one big happy Wing-T family over at SFC!” Welcome Jason Stewart and good luck to you this season. Santa Fe Christian is one of my favorite schools in the area. I have included a photo of Coach Stewart with the seventh grade flag football team.
On Nov. 1, I received some romantic news about one of my favorite couples in Rancho Santa Fe. Karian and Tom Forsyth are usually on the scene

Rancho Santa Fe Residents, Tom and Karian Forsyth in Whistler, Canada. Every year, Karian surpises Tom with a fabulous birthday trip.
many places around town, while hosting sizzling spa parties by poolside during the summer. Well, Tom’s birthday is just around the corner in the beginning of December. Guess what his birthday present is each year from his bride? Karian takes Tom to the airport each year on his important day and whisks him away to an unknown destination, which he does not know about until he arrives at the counter and receives the ticket in his hand.
Last year, Karian surprised Tom with a trip to Whistler, Canada. I have included a photo straight out of a James Bond movie, with the couple standing in front of a red helicopter up on the snowy slopes in Canada. Can you say “movie stars?” Also pictured is Tom with his buddies here in the Ranch for their local celebration. I wonder where it will be this year for the Forsyths’ next big adventure? How lucky for Tom, wouldn’t you agree? Stay tuned until next month for that news!
On Nov. 3, the Rancho Santa Fe school board honored R. Roger Rowe students who received perfect scores on their STAR testing at their meeting that evening. Parents, siblings, teachers and friends all gathered together at the Performing Center of Arts to witness this wondrous celebration, that honors the students and their perfect winning scores. Superintendent Lindy Delaney was also there to encourage the students. She also gave them all a personal tip: “When shaking hands, make sure you make good eye contact, too.” Excellent advice! Featured here are two of the recipients, my son Jackson Tuck and Rachel Waite. Rachel Waite is the daughter of Lance and Anna Waite. And, just in case inquiring minds would like to know, Jackson Tuck, is also the son of well-known news anchor Michael Tuck. Michael is now retired, remarried, and recently had a baby girl with his wife, lawyer Jill Tuck. They live in the covenant in the Ranch. Congratulations to all of the students from that night. What a special evening it was for all us there.
On Nov. 5, I received a wonderful picture of a Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club member’s granddaughter, Reese MacDonald. Reese’s soccer team scored the winning goal that weekend and the girls were all smiles (so were the parents!) that day. Reese is featured with her best friend Alexi Aloni. Both girls scored important goals that day for their team.
Later that day, I stopped by Lemon Twist Fruit Stand in Rancho Santa Fe for a wonderful art exhibit by local artist Nancy C. Henderson. Nancy was selling her beautiful original oil painting under a perfect blue sky on that lovely Saturday afternoon.
I took a photo of Nancy proudly standing next to her art that day. Nancy’s art varies from local nature scenes here in Rancho Santa Fe to the rolling hills of Tuscany. If you would like to buy any of Nancy’s art for your own collection, visit nancychenderson.com.
Popular resident Holly Manion came out to lend her support that day, too. We missed each other by just 10 minutes!

Dr. Seuss, 21 inspirational lessons by JD Meier

I have the pleasure of sharing with my readers a truly inspiring article written by “Sources of Light,” JD Meier. I stumbled across this amazing article and begged JD to let me share this on my website. As a promoter of Goodwill, positive thinking, he was kind enough to say yes.
Lessons Learned from Dr. Seuss by JD MEIER
“Kid, you’ll move mountains! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”– Dr. Seuss When I was a kid, Dr. Seuss was a constant source of inspiration for me. His stories filled my head with endless possibilities. Between Great Day for Up and The Cat in the Hat, I was
pretty much prepared for making the most of any day. I think his real masterpiece though was Oh! the Places You’ll Go! This is the book that convinced me I could move mountains and that life is what you make of it. 21 Lessons Learned from Dr. Seuss There are so many great lessons from Dr. Seuss. Each of his book is such a treasure trove of ideas and actions for a better life. What I did here is boil down a set of 21 lessons that highlight his key themes across his works and quotes:
1. Be a thinker of great things. Dr. Seuss teaches us, “Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!”
2. Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. Sometimes you just don’t know what you’ve got until after it’s gone. In Bartholomew and the Ooblek, King Didd got what he wished for, but the sticky Ooblek goo was worse than the fog, snow, sunshine, and rain that it replaced. The King quickly wanted his old weather back and he learned to appreciate it.
3. Be your best you. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” Make the most of what you’ve got. In Yertle the Turtle, we see “feather envy” and it’s a gentle reminder to be careful what you wish for and appreciate what you’ve got.
4. Bend your world in wonderful ways. Nobody bends it like the Cat in the Hat. From the metaphors you use, to the thinks that you think, you can shape your world that’s right in front of you.
5. Don’t put yourself in a box. You’re only limited by your own imagination. The Cat in the Hat teaches us how to let our imaginations run wild.
6. Don’t waste your time worrying who’s better than who. In Yertle the Turtle, Dr. Seuss teaches us that “You have better things to do than argue who’s better than who.”
7. Dream it and do it. You can move mountains when you put your mind to it. Direct your life like a blockbuster and make things happen. 8. Edutainment wins over boring and ho-hum. With whacky words, wondrous worlds, and fantastical characters, Dr. Seuss taught us the edutainment is how you change a child’s life. Reading is only boring if you make it so.
9. Kindle your curiosity. Keep your mind open and your eyes peeled. Stay curious and follow your growth.
10. Life happens in moments at a time. Don’t miss out on life by tuning out the little things along the way.
11. Own your fun. There’s more to do than play in the rain. When you’re bored, you’re boring. The Cat in the Hat teaches us to be the maker of our own fun. Make each day your own special blend of whatever it is that best floats your boat.
12. Play at your day. You can play at your day, in every way.
13. Persistence pays off. Be relentless in your pursuit of things. In Green Eggs and Ham, it was through persistence that Sam-I-Am finally got the unnamed character to try the green eggs and ham. In real life, Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected 27 times before being published by Vanguard Press.
14. Treat people fairly and squarely. In The Sneetches and Other Stories, Dr. Seuss shows us that we can’t judge people by their lot in life or whether they have a star on their belly. In Yertle the Turtle, it’s a reminder not to climb over people on your way to the top, because they’re same people you’ll see on your way back down.
15. Try it … you just might like it. In Green Eggs and Ham, when the unnamed character was surprised to find out that he actually likes green eggs and ham once he tried them. You just never know until you try.
16. Saying you’re sorry can help make things right. In Bartholomew and the Oobleck, when the king finally said the magic words, “I’m sorry,” and “it’s all my fault,” he helped make things right again.
17. See the bright side of things. It’s a great day for up, when you can see the sunny side of things. Sure sometimes you’ll have to work at it, but positivity is a skill. Do it daily.
18. Setbacks happen. Deal with them and move on. Make trouble think twice about messing with you.
19. Some people are much more unlucky than you. When you’re down in the dumps and things get real bad, remind yourself that somewhere, somehow, someway … somebody is much “more unlucky than you.”
20. Success is a journey and we all have our own paths. Make your journey count. Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t let conventional wisdom stop you. Lead the life you want to live, and when there’s no path, make one.
21. Your voice counts. In Horton Hears a Who, Dr. Seuss shows us how one little voice can tip the scale … after all, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” Top 10 Dr. Seuss Quotes Dr. Seuss has so many quotable quotes, from enjoying your day to being more you. He has such a way with words. Even when he reminds us of something we already know, he has a way of saying it that makes an old song sound new. Here is a sprinkling of some of my favorite quotes:
1. Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. 2. Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.
3. Only you can control your future.
4. So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads.
5. The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
6. Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.
7. Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.
8. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
9. You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.
10. You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. It’s inspirational gold. There is nobody youer than you, and the more that you learn the more places you’ll go.
Bravo. Dr. Seuss Quotes If you’re not familiar with Dr. Seuss’s quotes, then you’re in for a treat. It’s easy to read his words, and he’s a master of saying a lot with so little. A nice simple way to leverage his quotes is to pick one or two of your favorites. Sometimes the right quote is just what we need to hear and it can be the perfect catalyst that we need in our life. Enjoy!
Aloneness • All alone! Whether you like it or not, alone is something you’ll be quite a lot. • I’m afraid sometimes you’ll play lonely games too, games you can’t win because you’ll play against you. • You can get help from teachers, but you are going to have to learn a lot by yourself, sitting alone in a room.
Be Yourself • If you’d never been born, then you might be an Isn’t! An Isn’t has no fun at all. No, he disn’t. • You are you. Now, isn’t that pleasant? • You’re in pretty good shape for the shape you are in.
Everybody deserves a shot• A person’s a person, no matter how small. • I know, up on top you are seeing great sights, but down here at the bottom we, too, should have rights.
Fun • Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life’s realities. • From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere. • I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. • If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good. • It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how. • We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.
General• Be awesome! Be a book nut! • Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more … • I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam I am. • I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. Because an elephant’s faithful, 100 percent. • I’m glad we had the times together just to laugh and sing a song, seems like we just got started and then before you know it, the times we had together were gone. • Oh, the things you can find if you don’t stay behind! • Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple. • So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. • They say I’m old-fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast! • Words and pictures are yin and yang. Married, they produce a progeny more interesting than either parent.
Life Happens • I’m sorry to say so but, sadly it’s true that bang-ups and hang-ups can happen to you. • Things may happen and often do to people as brainy and footsy as you.
Make Things Happen • I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me! • There’s no limit to how much you’ll know, depending how far beyond zebra you go. • Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way. • Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
Positivity • And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed! • If you keep your eyes open enough, oh the stuff you will learn. Oh the most wonderful stuff. • It’s opener, out there, in the wide, open air. • Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky. • You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.
Thinking • Think and wonder, wonder and think. • Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!

Up from Grieving~
I am healing. That’s what I want to tell you. Anyone that reads this, you might be wondering, “What is she healing from?”
GRIEF This word doesn’t make sense in America. In a society where grieving should be done in less than three days after the funeral and the wake is over, I am proud of my own self in knowing how to “Go within” and stay away and until my heart healed from losing loved ones in 2010.
When you lose someone you love, especially a very close friend or wife, a child or a relative, it’s almost as if you have been stricken with a disease. Those that normally loved you or adored your normal “Aura” may fade back into the recesses of your past, just like a childhood friend. Maybe it could be YOU that’s changed after this traumatic loss and others sense the change and follow your vibrations. Whatever it might be, just know that grieving is natural and it’s not something that is finished in one week.
My own personal experience with grief in 2010 taught important lessons and also showed relative flaws in our natural acceptance of others feelings. What I miss about living in Hollywood and being an actress is the sensitivity level most of the core group of individuals I hung out with there had naturally.
Actors/Actresses/Artists/Musicians, you name it, they are looking to feel, and that includes pain and sadness as well as the peaks of sheer joy. Feeling gives us a rare perception that without our emotion we could not decipher or recognize important moments or thoughts we might miss, if we just numbed ourselves to the ups and downs.
Albeit with that out and my big stamp of approval for artists out there, I found myself completely collapsed from the inside-out last year during the holidays with others merely looking at me wondering, “Hey, where’s that party girl that knows how to set up the parties?” That party girl, fun loving social friend found herself in 2010 watching a good friend die in a hospice at the age of 37 from pancreatic cancer. That girl found herself wondering why that happened. With a sense of dread that something awful can happen outside my door that year, I began to say a prayer for my husband each day before he left to go anywhere because I had grown so hypersensitive to death.
Only a few short months later, another wonderful friend of my committed suicide. An unexpected shock for most that knew this person. His life had resembled no outward signs or signals to this ending. With only a few short months in between these two events, I found myself going within, and avoiding the normal life I had because there was nowhere for THE NEW emerged me to be in my suddenly changed world.
Everyone kept expecting that fun loving girl once again…
What can I tell you? After one year, I actually truly laughed a real zany laugh the other night! I was startled by the freedom in such a raw hearty laugh. The sky was dark as my husband, son and I were driving over Del Dios Highway next to Lake Hodges, as the stars twinkled across the water. I had a glimpse of the regular “Me” again. I was becoming the girl I was once was, you know, the believer in dreams. The person that loved to socialize, see friends and find new things to write and talk about. I was on the mend…finally.
After one year, this is my story to you: Those that are grieving, feeling, wishing that unbearable pain of loss will subside. If you don’t run from you emotion but truly go through it–I mean cry all you can, be sad alone, tell the friend that truly will listen, surround yourself with a support group, but also protect your soul in the meantime–there will come that day for you when you can reach up and find a glimmer of your soul that you once were before you lost that person you cherished so much. It will happen. I didn’t think so, but yes, with time, we can rebuild our hearts and minds.
Grief is a natural process in life. There is nothing wrong with feeling pain or for being sad or wanting to stay close to what you lost. But just know that with time, action and truly dealing with your what you feel, that day will come when you will be surprised to hear yourself laugh again. There will be a glimmer, a small light that ignites your soul. You will then find the courage again to dream and to believe in miracles after the sadness washes away with your own ability to make sure you take care of yourself, your health and anything else before moving forward.
Because what we leave behind, stays with us and who we are today is up for us to decide. Grief is real and so are our souls. We can endure so much, rebuild nations, lose, love, and find a new hope still exists in the dark mystery of tomorrow.
Books that I read that helped me with GRIEF: “Up from Grief,” by Bernadine Kreis and Alice Pattie and “Good Grief,” by Lolly Winston. (The first book is a nonfiction and the second a fiction book. Both deal with grief and how to survive it.)
Roy Lichtenstein Sets $43 Million Record at Christie’s
ROY LICHENTSTEIN “PEEPHOLE” sets $43 million record at Christie’s.
“People would rather have art or gold instead of paper money,” collector Eli Broad said, after leaving the auction at Christie’s.
What’s a safe investment these days? According to collector, Eli Broad:
ART.
“I can see the whole room!… And There’s Nobody In It!,” sold for $43.2 million dollars. Leonardo Dicaprio was just one of many in the audience to witness this ground breaking record in the art world. While other investments can be shaky right now, it appears that the soul’s must-have’s, like art, can be a positive investment.
Roy Lichtenstein was an famous American Pop Art painter. Born in 1923, Roy Lichtenstein only recently just died in 1997 from pneumonia. Lichtenstein found worldwide fame in the the early 60′s….selling out at his first show even before it opened. His first one-man show was held at famed art curator’s Leo Castelli’s gallery in 1962.
(Art Curator Leo Castelli’s collection eventually ended up being donated at the Smithsonian Institution. Castelli’s largest private sales was estimated at $600 million in 2007, sold by the heirs of his first wife, Ileana Sonnabend.)
Legends Art Gallery in La Jolla, California carries a very well known Pop Artist, Nelson De La Nuez. A sought after De La Nuez was chosen to be the official artist of the “70th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz.” legendary Michael Jackson’s last gift to his children were three of his paintings: ”Alice in Dali Land,” “Lost Fairy Tales” and “Flavor of the Month.”
Why Pop Art? What is the fascination? Check out this linke for more details on Pop Art: http://wwar.com/masters/l/lichtenstein-roy.html
If one had to analyze the rise to fame of Pop Art, it would appear this brightly, flashy artwork appeals to the masses because of the blending of the message the Pop Art displays, and the emotions that are evoked by the person viewing the work.“I Can See The Whole Wide Room!…And There’s Nobody In It!” conveys an immediate sense of ‘aloneness,’ by much of the canvas being covered in black. The peep hole is like the soul peering out into the world, wondering why life can be so full, yet, feel empty in the same moment.
Swedish, Impressionist painter Edvard Munch’s famous “The Scream,” has a similar tone in one glance, too. However, this painting alludes to more hysteria and melancholia layered in the textures of the paint, as well as the shape of the eyes and mouth.
(“The Scream,” which had been stolen and now recovered, is worth around $50 million, even after being damaged.)
“I Can See The Whole Room!…And, Nobody Is In It,” exudes an immediate seperation to the observer. Like life can feel vastly empty, while lacking the wholeness our heart desires.
What do you see in Lichtenstein’s painting? What do you see inside “The Scream?”
Each piece of art can tell a different story to all of us.
Inside one painting, like “I Can See The Whole Room!…And There’s Nobody in it,” we might find what we never knew was missing. Solace can be found in courage if we examine something more meaningful and frightening, when we take just one step closer to look within our own soul.

I am a lover of authors and books. My great escape in this world is to turn my head down and to bury my thoughts inside the words and books.
There is nothing more satisfying than taking a journey inside a novel. There is nothing more pleasing to the mind than to find a character that you can identify with, and say, “Yes, I feel like sometimes, too.” Some are drawn to nature. Some are obsessed with sports, bird watching, ocean loving, hikers, beauty, fashion, movies, friends and well, for me—BOOKS. I had so many that clutter my life, I have had to abandon them on occasion. Rather give them to a second hand bookstore. In 2007, I walked away from over 500 books that lined the room of my walls like army of friends and angels protecting me when I lived alone with my son. When I do not take time to nurture my soul by finding a book within reach, I can feel overly sullen, then suddenly realize I haven’t been devoting enough “Me” time to myself. That happens to be turning off the computer, turning off the cell phone and sitting quietly with a story in hand without being disturbed by anyone. I went through a Biography phase in my early twenties, the must have “Self Help Guru Books,” when I lived in Hollywood, and the period of philosophy books when I felt rather intellectual for reading “The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. However, honestly nothing compares to an amazing novel. A book that can take you somewhere else, meet new fantastic characters and pull me out of my daily routine. John Irving once wrote in “Trying To Save Piggy Sneed” that he felt like he had known fictional characters better than those living. I can relate to that. I can relate to why I search out an author, their many many books, and try to read them all in one sitting. Just briefly, I thought I would share with you my current favorite authors. You might see a trend; they are all women. There have only been a few authors that I love that are men, but that truly is another post, and I don’t want to get sidetracked into telling you why I prefer John Steinbeck any day over Ernest Hemingway. So, get ready to meet some truly fascinating authors that are worth finding, buying and devouring their books in one full sitting when you can find the time.
#1 Luanne Rice Luanne’s writing is like visiting a sacred place. Her fiction novels all deal with truly deep moving issues we all must face at
some point like grief, loss, recovery or starting over. She also writes about the dynamics between families: Young characters to older; sister relationships and broken family ties. Luanne definitely writes character driven novels that pull you in right from the beginning of the book. Magically written, her style is used sparingly with meaning and depth. Her stories ring true to your bones.
The first novel I ever read of hers was “Cloud Nine.” This book dealt with the main character battling cancer. Besides dealing with life battling issues, her books are filled with meaning and hope behind all of her plots. There are lessons and answers you can find within yourself, while reading one of her books. Also, many of her books take place near the beach and sand. The air is full of sea salt and you can feel the wind brush your cheeks as you turn the pages in one of her books. Here are my top favorites by Luanne: “Home Fires,” “Follow The Stars Home,” “Beach Girls,”Deep Blue Sea for Beginners,” Angels All Over Town, “Cloud Nine,” “Summer Light,” and her newest novel, “The Silver Boat.” Luanne has written 30 novels, and is a New York Bestselling Author.
****Why do we love certain books and what makes them mean so much to us? Impact, I would say is the 1# thing for me when I consider why certain novels resonate deeper than others. At the time I discovered Luanne Rice’s novels, they were like white little beacons of hope touching my soul. I found them when I needed them the most. For this reason, Luanne will always rank as my top female modern author.
#2 Morag Prunty (a.k.a. Kate Kerrigan). Talk about making a great discovery in the year of 2010, Irish writer, Morag Prunty truly
added some much needed fun back into my life. (This period I am referring to is shortly after being married to my husband, and all of fun single friends, well, yes, went on being single, while I found myself in the other category looking sideways at silly, which lead me to finding more books to read at Barnes and Noble.) “Recipes for a Perfect Marriage,” made me laugh. I loved the opening and I never even realized that how appropriate I should find that book then, but I just loved this book. I don’t want to describe it because I have just realized you will immediately think I saw the same correlation in my marriage, too, to the main character, which I didn’t. But let’s just say her witty style and selfless approach through the main character made me remember what it was like to laugh during a time I missed the laughter. The chapters open with a recipe, which the main character’s grandmother created. Each recipe reveals a foreshadow in it that fits with the evolving plot and character developments. What I loved most about this novel is how there are two love stories woven into the book; the grandparents and the the granddaughter. Perfect, salty, sweet, and loved the recipes, this story brought me to all of Morag’s other books, so I will forever love it the most.
Here are some of her other books: “Disco Daddy,” “Dancing with Mules,” “Poison Arrows,” and “Super Star Lovers.” I also loved her “Miracle of Grace.” I’ll never forget the disappointment I had when “Disco Daddy” arrived at my doorstep and I had already read the American printed version by Harper Collins! My heart sank because I was so jazzed about reading another new book by Morag! http://www.katekerrigan.ie.
- #3 Elizabeth Berg “Pull of the Moon,” really spoke to me, you know, I literally could her “Nan” in my head.
- She was real. I went on that journey with her. I found myself looking for a solid green rock to keep next to my bed just like she did. And I wanted to congratulate Nan on taking off and finding herself when sometimes in life we do absolutely lose ourselves along the way. Where did that girl go? You know, the one I was when I was 13, 22, 33 etc, etc? This book deals with thoughts like that, andwhy we lose pieces of ourselves in relationships or in the midst of our journey. I have read it several times. When I read “Pull of the Moon,” I found myself rooting for Nan, begging her to find herself in that turquoise diary that was overpriced. And, that green rock? Well, I kept wondering, did she she take that on the trip, too? Berg’s writing is sharp and crisp and just like you are there with the tiny details that reveals more than just the setting, but also how they describe so much about each scene. I will forever love her as an author because that book is in my top 5 of all time. http://www.elizabeth-berg.net/
“Pull of the Moon.” “Range of Motion” and “Open House.” The reason I found Morag Prunty was because Elizabeth Berg endorsed one of her novels.
#4 Sophie Kinsella I know. I am a little late in the game and everyone has been reading “Chick Lit” for at least ten years.
Becky Bloomwood’s quirky disasters and her needs to own the latest must-have designers like an alcoholic, had me bursting with laughter through the entire series. Becky sense of love for her friends, self, family and husband add another texture to this funny and witty character that also depth and spunk in her heart, too… However, “Twenties Girl,” with a ghost named Sadie and a must have necklace may be my absolute favorite stand alone novel. I laughed, I cried, and I wanted to be Sadie somehow, too. She inspired me to dig deeper into my closet and pull out the more fabulous things and retire the beach shoes. (Although, I’ve never been a flip-flop girl!)
“Undomestic Goddess,” “Gatecrasher,” (this title was under her married name) are also two of my favorites. I will wait patiently for Becky’s move to Beverly Hills with the rest of Sophie Kinsella fans. “Can you Keep a Secret,” “Twenties Girl,” and all of the Shopaholic Books, period. Which is my favorite of all?
Becky Bloomwood (Brandon) is a modern day Holly Golightly with more fun and verve to her. I absolutely would follow Becky anywhere!
- #5 Alice Hoffman The first book I ever read by Alice Hoffman was, “The Ice Queen.” I think I cried within two pages of reading this novel. I’ve never been so moved so quickly by such an up close first person narrative that I was entranced by this story about lightning striking human beings, the love story within and how sometimes icy roads must always be avoided. The brother and sister in this book both learned about life the hard way after losing a mother very on in life and how some pieces of our childhood can never be mended with time. The butterflies at the end, the baby on the way and the therapy group. Need I say more? Here are a few of her other books that I also loved: “Local Girls,” Here on Earth,” “Skylight Confessions,” “Practical Magic,” and “Blue Diary.”
- Alice Hoffman can shatter me in two pages. Her writing takes you down to the depth of the characters muck and things you may not even want to see, but you go there because you can’t resist turning the page. At the end of each novel that I have read, I am always filled with a sense of hope, a small light shining across the horizon. I know when I read a book by Alice Hoffman, I must prepare myself to be ready to feel.~
#6 Maeve Binchy I went through a period recently, where the highlight of my day was finding her paperpack novels and reading them all in a row, one after another. “The Lilac Bus,” what can I tell you? I want to go to Ireland just to ride this bus and meet the folks that rode it on this novel. “Quintins,” when can I get there to eat that this fabulous place? “Echoes,” where can I find this cave that sat at the bottom of the town? This wind swept seaside, where a body is found floating in the water at the beginning of the novel? The fear in finding out the person that had drowned kept me reading for hours by my nightstand, lit in a yellow haze book- glaze of wonder at unraveling this plot, these characters with slow, delicate reading, for fear I might miss something. Maeve Binchy is also writes wonderful short stories of fiction. “The Return Journey” is perfect if you are looking for easy, light stories to read with heart, meaning and fun.
“Tara Road” was my first Maeve Binchy book that I had ever read. I had read it when I was pregnant with my son. Those nine months rank up there as probably the worst due to health conditions, fatness, and the fact I had just left Los Angeles, a career and my life. “Tara Road” walked around in my hands like a friend, as I remodeled a Ranch house in a place called The Ranch. I just felt so connected to those two women that switched homes one summer and rediscovered themselves again in a new environment. You see, as I write this, I can see how that book gave me comfort in the very thing that had been happening to me at that time…
Books~ A place to be, to escape and to live in our dreams. Forget your iPad, your Kindle, your computer, your little phone that is giving you wrinkles as you try to read your stories On-line. (Ladies, remember, don’t wrinkle your squint your eyes!) Pick up a book at your local Bookstore and take time to read, even if it’s just for fun. You might find that life is never better when you have a story to look forward to after the sun sets. I could keep going on and on about this journey of reading. Books have helped me discover things about my own soul that I know I might not have recognized without the insight and stories from other writers. In the midst of busy schedules, friendships and other relationships, a book helps us focus our mind inward and become reflective about what we are reading. In the process, we find those hidden jewels we might have missed if we hadn’t buried our minds inside the pages of a book.
I love a lot of other women authors, too:
Billie Letts, Sue Monk Kidd, Debbie Macomber, Emily Giffin, Lolly Winston, Barbara Kingsolver, Marian Keyes, Candace Bushnell, and Daniel Steele, Jodi Picoult, Elizabeth Gilbert, Kristin Hannah, and Susan Minot.

What a brilliant writer with amazing prose……………….
Well! Rip my heart out Alice Hoffman.
God! ”The Ice Queen” genuinely moved me in ways I did not want to remember the depth of dispair. Then drudging up something that taps deep into the sacred places of my soul. This book blew me out of this world, to a point I had to cry silently after I had finished. And, then I could not hold all of the emotions that came undone after furtively reading this book inbetween another Sophie Kinsella novel. Now I know what all of the fuss is about when it comes to Alice Hoffman. Rock Star is more like it! A must read for the deeper souls out there that like to feel edgy, soulful and remember life can be brutally harsh, yet full of hope and butterflies near the ocean…. Miss Krista Lafferty is proud to be a Rancho Santa Fe Rotarian. Not only is she a member, she is active in the club. The Rancho Santa Fe News’ assistant advertising manager has been a popular face around town in Rancho Santa Fe for over the last two years. If you aren’t in the Rotary, there is a good chance she has met with you or at least called you regarding promoting your business in this paper. Krista’s background in the newspaper and advertising business dates back to when she was just a young girl and her mother (Terrie Drago) was the editor of another paper here in town.
Now Krista is lending her marketing and business expertise as the co-chair on the “Sassy Santa” event coming up at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club Nov. 18 and 19th. Rancho Santa Fe resident, Jane-Allison Austin is also co-chairing this event, too. The first night is entitled, “Ladies Night Out,” while the following day is more of a family affair with a chance to visit Santa and shop at over 35 local vendors and retailers in this area. Why wait for Black Friday? Don’t miss this wonderful two day experience that promotes our immediate economy in Rancho Santa Fe and a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Rotary, who in returns donates to numerous charities. Most importantly, this will be “A Must Attend Social Event” in the Ranch and you shan’t miss it!
Around Town
At the end of September, local residents, Michael and Elaine Gallagher attended their son’s own movie premier in Los Angeles. The movie, “UrFRENZ,” is a film that addresses “cyber-bullies.” The film also garnered a wonderful review from the L.A. Times. I had the good fortune of enjoying some of Michael Gallaher’s Totally Sketch Comedy skits this summer when my husband Robin and I joined Elaine and Michael for dinner. Not only is their son a talented director, but he also has that fabulous charisma on camera that could land him in the seat of a Late Night Talk Show Host. Watch out Jay Leno! Michael Gallagher is a rising star. I have included a wonderful shot from that evening with Michael and Elaine Gallagher, along with Jana Winternitz next to son, Michael. (Jana is the producer, Michael is co-producer and Michael and Elaine were the executive producers.) Michael and Jana are both local Torrey Pines High School graduates.
On Oct.10, I had the pleasure of meeting Jill and Matthew Sorge for dinner at one of the best Mexican restaurants in San Diego, Hernandez Hideaway. If you haven’t been to this eclectic joint, you need to take a drive down Del Dios to the Lake Hodges area. You won’t be disappointed. From affordable pitchers of margaritas, to endless chips and salsa, their dishes are fantastic. Also, it’s family friendly; so do make sure to bring everyone. Jackson and Matthew just loved it. My favorite part of the experience is the exquisite backdrop of the Lake Hodges scenic views that surround the restaurant. Here is a fun photo of my best friends, Jill and Matthew Sorge, with my son Jackson Tuck.
On Oct. 13, some exciting news has developed recently in my life. I am now an art consultant at Legends Gallery in La Jolla. As an avid art-lover and anything creative, you can imagine my exuberance and excitement in this new opportunity for me. Legends Gallery is an elegant Fine Art Gallery on Prospect Street, right across the street from Georges. With different price points from the array of artists showcased at Legends, there is something for everyone. And, if you are into collecting well-known art, you can find Marc Chagall, Norman Rockwell, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Dr. Seuss, and Mackenzie Thorpe pieces. Legends has a select few “Rare Sold Out” pieces of Dr. Seuss, which we are still able get in for clients. If you visit the gallery, please mention I sent you there! If anything, stop in and say “hello.” You won’t be disappointed. Here is a photo of local artist and gallery employee Brittany Saake and I. Roree Mayhew is the Director of the Gallery. For more information, check out legendsgallerylajolla.com.
On Oct.14, I left Rancho Santa Fe and took a week’s hiatus from “Machel’s Ranch,” too. My husband and I walked across the Mexican border, caught a cab to the Tijuana Airport and boarded a plane to our final destination — La Paz, Mexico. A much needed vacation for both of us. You can imagine the two of us enjoying the hot rays of the sun down the edge of the inland coastline of Baja California.
We celebrated my husband’s birthday with his parents, Katie and Ken Shull, too! What a lovely time. Here is a sun-drenched photo of proud mother and son together. Make sure you remember to take time to exit your normal routine so you can appreciate your own daily blessings. A vacation just puts everything into perspective, doesn’t it? I must say, I did miss The Ranch.
On Oct. 25, I received some exciting information from a good friend of mine regarding where to find amazing party dresses, wedding occasions, proms or pageant dresses for the hectic holiday season. “Mia Bella” is now open in Del Mar. Think of Mia Bella as your own personal shopper, the place to help you look fabulous for your next event. For more information, here is their website, miabellacouture.com. I have included a sweet photo of gorgeous girls with happy smiles, which really says it all.
SAVE THE DATE: “Sassy Santa” at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club Nov. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can contact Krista Lafferty at klafferty@coastnewsgroup.com. Don’t miss out on exclusive premiere shopping at businesses in the area before the infamous drop kick date of Black Friday! Support your local economy, and also help give back to the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary that’s always helping make our community better and more fabulous each year.
The Rancho Santa Fe News, “Machel’s Ranch”
Do you believe in angels? I do. I have never seen one in person, but have often thought, in retrospect, after meeting someone under an odd circumstance, that that person could have been an angel. Recently, I watched a show called “Angels Among Us,” which is a television series based on those individuals that believe their lives were altered or saved by their guardian angel. This particular episode focused on the 9/11 attacks. It told of the surreal accounts of victims trapped inside the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. The most amazing account was by the last victim to be pulled from Ground Zero, Genelle McMillan.
Genelle McMillan was buried alive under 110 stories, trapped beneath the rubble for more than 27 hours. Originally, Genelle said prayers, asking that she would die quickly because rescue seemed impossible. However, as she recounted this horrific event, she said she then began thinking of her family over and over, and she decided to pray for a miracle. Within a few hours of that prayer someone grabbed her one free hand that was stretched out between the rubble and debris. “Don’t worry Genelle, I’ve got you.” He said his name was Paul. Genelle recounted how she held onto Paul’s hand for hours until suddenly she heard voices close by, and that was when he let go. Genelle McMillan became known as the last survivor pulled from the wreckage of the World Trade Center.
While the rescue teams all wore gloves, Paul did not. No one had seen Paul when they dug beneath the rubble and there was no feasible way someone could be there. Who was Paul? One may never know, but Genelle believes it was her guardian angel. How inspiring it was to hear her recount and share her story. Just remember, while life sometimes can feel bleak or difficult, take comfort in the unseen angels that I feel definitely walk amongst us.
AROUND TOWN
On Sept. 17 and Sept. 18, Krista Laffety and fiancé Mike Confer competed in an event in Northern California touted as the toughest event on the planet: the “Tough Mudder.”
If you are around town much during the day or happen to be in the Rotarian circle here in Rancho Santa Fe, there is a good chance you know Krista. One of my best friends over the last few years, we have shared many fun times working together in the newspaper publishing business. The course was 12 miles long with 19 obstacles, including an elevation gain of 3,000 feet! Wow. Mike came in fifth place with a time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Then he competed again alongside his future bride, which sounds like true love to me. Here is a photo of the dynamic duo soon-to-be-betrothed. Congrats on finishing and participating in this event!
In Southern California on those same two days, “Fresh Start Surgical Gifts” had a successful Surgery weekend. Thirteen patients received reconstructive surgery from this charity dedicated to helping disfigured children start their lives over again. There were over 70 volunteers over the course of this special weekend. Featured here is Doug Davis from Kearny Person Ford with Amanda Thompson. Amanda is the development manager at Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Site SoCal, San Diego Count Ford, and The Parker Foundation were also sponsors for the surgeries that weekend. For more information on this wonderful charity, here is the website: Freshstart.org.
On Sept. 22, Fashion Week came to Rancho Santa Fe at the 54th Annual Country Friends Fashion Show. This was 7th consecutive year that Country Friends has partnered with South Coast Plaza. Did you know that in the last 55 years this amazing organization has raised over $12 million for charities and worthy causes for the San Diego County? How amazing! This year the streets in the Ranch shut down, traffic was diverted, while many beautiful women decked out in their elegant hats and dresses and chic fashions filled the greenbelt area adjacent to the Inn. Featured here in this beautiful photo from that day is Co-Chair Melanie Cruz with friends, plus a gorgeous snap shot of one of the models on the runway. Interesting fact: I met my husband for the first time in 2006 at this event and still remember the pinned striped shirt he was wearing, white slacks with Louis Vuitton black loafers. Due to a heavy writing schedule, this was my first year to miss the event since 2005. Luckily, Melanie was kind enough to share this photo. My girlfriend, Bianca Macaluso snapped the photo of the model for me, too. Thanks! I must add Lemon Twist Fruit Stand was also a proud sponsor that day. They donated chocolate covered strawberries for the afternoon dessert.
Later that evening, just around the corner in La Jolla, Priscilla Wood joined fellow members of SMARTY at Symbolic Motor for the “So you Want to be An Entrepreneur” event. This group isn’t just about being smart or looking good, this group creates an environment for businesswomen to mingle, find more opportunity by encouraging one another and in the meantime having, fun, too. Each event photo always looks like something off the red carpet from a Hollywood movie premier, just like this photo for example. Priscilla is featured with Elise Muhawi and Cassie Weiner Piasecki. For more information on this savvy group of together women, please check out their website at smartypeople.com.
On Sept. 28, I received some exciting news about one Ranch resident, Violet MacDonald’s granddaughters, Reese MacDonald. Reese is playing soccer this fall for the Del Mar Sharks team. Reese is featured here with her best friend Alexi Aloni and teammate Stephanie Fuller. Doesn’t this photo capture the innocence of youth and the exuberance of friendship? A must share for this week’s column for sure…I know Violet must be a very proud grandmother! Violet is active in the Rancho Santa Fe Garden and can be seen around town enjoying fabulous lunches with friends.

Woody Allen once said, “The heart wants what the heart wants.” The same applies for friends. We may never know why they mean so much to us. However, when that person you missed comes back, it feels like an unexpected gift. The sun will come out and you will remember the good times. Remember, some friends are worth fighting for, as for that one sitting in the back pew? Well, I do believe that is an entirely different story for next time…
AROUND TOWN

Blonde Ambition at the Races~Machel Penn Shull with one of her favorite's, Elaine Gallagher at their Turf Club Party at the Del Mar Races.
On Sept.2, Michael and Elaine Gallagher invited some close friends, family and colleagues to their End of the Summer Del Mar Race Track party. I must admit that was my first time back to the track in ages. Due to a busy schedule with my husband’s business re-opening this year after the Witch Creek Fires, my social scene has pretty much been looking at fruit, vegetables and more fruit. No complaints. But you can surmise by the last statement that I was an enthusiastic wife and friend thrilled to make it to Elaine and Michael’s wonderful party. I only managed to knock off a saucer or two on the coffee table in the fancy suite up on the fifth floor. (Yes, I did do that, and I was making a joke about it.) I am sharing this photo of just Elaine and I because it captures why ‘two blondes’ are better than one. Thanks Elaine and Michael for helping back out into the world again.
On Sept. 8, while the world was gearing up for the 10-year anniversary of Sept.11, Southern California experienced what the world would be like without electricity. If you were out in the madness and trying to get home that day, then you know it was actually very scary out there. People were stranded; no gas, no bankcards, no technology and those poor victims stuck in elevators downtown! After my almost two hour drive that normally takes only 25 minutes, I finally pulled up to Lemon Twist. Guess what I did? I started stocking up for the worst — a mother preparing for battle.
Well, I had glimmers of that 1983 movie called “The Day After.” This was a movie about what happens the next day after nuclear war hits. Very frightening. Luckily, San Diego returned to sanity. The next day I quickly ran out and bought am/fm radio headsets for all of my friends at The Dollar Tree. (The things we do when we are in survival mode.)
Later that day, Ranch resident Neysa Whiteman hosted the Scripps Charity Event “Wine, Women & Shoes” at her lovely estate in Rancho Santa Fe. I do believe there was quite a buzz on this party for a couple of weeks around town. I even received phone calls just making sure I would be there. Due to school starting that week and an insurmountable new line-up of homework, I couldn’t make it. However, here is a picture of Neysa Whiteman with a few of her guests from that day — lovely ladies out in style under the eucalyptus trees for charity. Thanks for sharing the photo with me.
On Sept. 9, I noticed these new beautiful cards on display down at Lemon Twist Fruit Stand. You may not know this, but I absolutely love art, painters and beautiful water color greeting cards! When my husband told me that the artist was Ranch Realtor, Laureen Weaver, I must admit I was very impressed and excited. Laureen failed to mention to me (being humble I am sure!) about her amazing gift and that she is an excellent artist. Painting is not easy, especially with watercolors. Her cards are of scenic views of Rancho Santa Fe and other picturesque paintings that make beautiful gifts for anyone. Here is Laureen’s website: thebrokenbrush.com. You can also find them at Lemon Twist, at 8175 Del Dios Highway. Another important note, Laureen is also a member of the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild.
On Sept.15, parents were invited to Back To School Night at Roger Rowe. I managed to squeeze in my son’s sixth grade class just in time to hear all of the wonderful things they are learning about this year. The classrooms are just luxurious there. Wow, how impressive…and so are the teachers, the staff and the room aids that help out so much. Here is a gorgeous photo of Kerrie Lunsford, Allison Stratton and Sharon Krug, whom are all moms of sixth grade students. Kerrie is just one of the many Room Moms that donates her time to make our children’s lives more organized and special at school. Thanks, Kerrie

Do you sometimes feel like a book chooses you? I do. An avid book reader and a frequent shopper at Book Tales in Rancho Santa Fe, you could say that I’ve had this experience on several occasions at different moments on my own life’s journey. Sometimes in life, it feel like there are synchronicities existing, pulling your subconscious to find just what you might need during challenging moments and a reprieve from your normal “day to day” moments. “Good Grief,” by Lolly Winston just happens to be the book I am referencing. The clever title and the book cover of a pair of pink bunny slippers worn by main character Sophie Stanton actually gives you the impression of a slightly upbeat tone within the pages of this novel. But this book is anything but a lighthearted. However, sometimes it better to take the road less traveled and find a more concise perspective than you might have had before.
Around Town
On Aug. 20, I woke up excited to see the sun was out in full force, without one cloud marking the blue sky. Why? Because every other Saturday or so I make my favorite stop at the Book Tales, the second hand bookshop in the Ranch right next to the library. Yes, as you read above, I just love this place. And, on this particular day my good friend Shannon Elle came with me to visit this enchanting bookstore. I have included a photo from that day of all of Shannon’s books that she found with Nancy Miller. Nancy informed us she has been part of the Library guild for 30 years and has a passion for books, too. So, do take my advice and stop by during the week before 4 p.m. or on Saturday. If you love books, you won’t regret it.
On Aug. 26, I had the pleasure of enjoying a spectacular evening at Mille Fleurs. If you didn’t know, this is one of the busiest times of the year there because of Del Mar’s racetrack season.
When my husband and I arrived, I do believe there was a stretch limo parked out front, a Roll Royce adjacent to the bank and piano bar guests lined up right outside to squeeze in to the already packed bar. Every table on the courtyard was filled with beautiful people dressed in cocktail attire and the dining room was packed inside, too. The energy felt electric that evening. I have never been happier to be out again in the evening in Rancho Santa Fe. I have featured a fun photo of a well known face around town Advertising Assistant Manager, Krista Lafferty from the Rancho Santa Fe News on the right of my husband, Robin Shull with Shannon Elle seated on his right side. Shannon is working as a hairstylist in Del Mar. An inside fact: Krista, Shannon and I worked briefly together in 2006 for another newspaper and what fun those days were, too!
On Aug. 27, the weather continued to shine. Not only was it sunny, but it also felt almost unbearably warm for the first time in awhile. I had the wonderful pleasure of looking forward to one of my favorite events, a spa party at Karian Forsyth’s home in The Crosby.
I’m sure if you’ve read my column you know that this is featured every so often and I must say, I love writing about that day. With the weather being absolutely perfect, who knew the food and wine could be, too? Of course, at Karian’s home every vase, every photo, each plate and glass exemplify her personality with verve and color. Throwing a party takes talent, but to coordinate that feeling of exquisite sophistication found down to a fork in your hand takes real talent. And, that Karian has, not to mention just being one of my most supportive friends, ever.
Tried and true, I know I can count on her word and as a friend that always cares. How lucky for me. Here is a gorgeous photo of just some of the ladies that day. I feel it captures the fun we were all having. Thanks, Karian, for always bringing a bit of glamour and “girl time” back into my schedule!
Later that day, as I was leaving the Crosby through the side gate that leads right through San Dieguito Trails, I snapped this photo of a tranquil resting spot that might be a hidden jewel in Rancho Santa Fe. If you go hiking soon, you must seek out this lovely secluded spot right near where you park at the bottom of the trail. Also, don’ t forget, we lose an hour coming up shortly this fall, so enjoy the longer days and take advantage of the sunset before we roll back the time the first week in November.
On Aug. 29, the roads were packed before 8 a.m. in the Ranch with every man, woman, student and child vying for a spot in the line for the first day of school. If you missed the memo from Roger Rowe School’s new “Tardy Policy” and your child is a student, do please keep reading.
Starting this year, if you are even one minute late without a legitimate reason, you will have to live with the image of your child sitting in detention for one hour during lunch break. You will then be notified of this and have to live with the fact that it was your fault. Wow. I guess they know how to get the point across. Let’s just say I will be leaving 15 minutes early each day to avoid Jackson hanging out in the detention room. Good luck parents! Don’t be late this year to school. I have included a picturesque photo of the new campus that is now still only one year old. The construction time was hard to suffer through, but wow, was it worth the wait, right parents?
An inside tip if you are looking to change up your lunch box selection, call Tim Cusac, the owner of Caffe Positano in Rancho Santa Fe. He has wonderful, healthy and affordable lunch choices on his menu. He also delivers daily to all the schools in the area. Here is his number: (858) 759-1940. For those of you who may not place the name together with the shop, it’s the main coffee shop on Paseo Delicas, and there is also a location in Fairbanks
